Drug decriminalization decreases number of addicts
    http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/n...rtugal-addicts

Looks like decriminalization of drugs has worked in portugal.

We need to seriously think about implementing a decriminalization of drugs policy here. The current system is a failure, it does not work, it will not work and it is putting people in jail who shouldnt really be in there.

Drugs should be not just decriminalised but entirely legalised as it is impossible for us to stop people from taking drugs as the current "War on Drugs" style of policy and US prohibition has now made ever so crystal clear. Legalising drugs would reduce crime by putting drug dealers and suppliers out of business, make the drugs cleaner and safer for the users. It would also boost the economy and create many jobs just like the alcohol and tobacco industries currently do so. It would become easier to scientists to research the medicinal properties of many now prohibited substances. And the government could also tax drugs just as it does for alcohol and tobacco and remove any financial burden that the users would have on government institutions such as the NHS. And the use of drugs is not going to suddenly shoot through the roof just because its legal.

The down side to their drugs policy is that as a tourist you can't walk more than a few metres without someone trying to sell you drugs. Even if you wanted some, you'd probably get fed up of it.

yes i agree with full legalization. drugs and drug use has only really been banned in the last century, people have been taking drugs hundred of years before we were born and they will take drugs hundreds of years after we die.

what right do i or anyone else (the government) have to tell you what you can and cannot put in your body?

Bill Hicks always said that drugs shouldn't be legalised. They should be compulsory.

They should legalise SOME drugs. I.e. Cannabis

    edit: Also, I'd just like to add;
Is it the decriminalisation of drugs or is it the extra support that addicts are receiving that has caused the number of addicts to fall...?

It would seem that everyone here is jumping straight to the conclusion that it is the former when it may well not be.

No. The population on a whole is too stupid to be able to deal with access to all drugs.

There is a reason why we have specific gun laws so I don't see why a similar reason wouldn't apply to drugs.

Drug cartels will still make billions, yes there are dangerous drugs but making them illegal has made them more dangerous!! There is no regulation, you leave the production in the hands of psychopaths who cut the drugs so you're not guaranteed to get what you want.

No making drugs illegal has not stopped people taking them, it just makes them cheaper and easier to get! (Drug dealers dont ask for ID) so legalise ALL DRUGS or NONE.

And if people want to take drugs when its legal then so be it. In a FREE SOCIETY you should be able to put whatever you want in your body, good or bad, without the government telling you what to do.

Everybody has access to them now though? Except they are illegal and contaminated with all sorts of impurities. And 99% of us would still refuse to ever try drugs like heroin.

Wait, if everyone is at home, then who's driving the domino's trucks...?

I've always supported a full legalisation of cannabis. I'm not sure cocaine, heroin, shrooms and the like should be fully legalised, though you could argue decriminalising them would be effective.

The drug cartels can no longer profit from it, we can work to make the drug safer through different production methods and regulation (just like alcohol).

People wont be scared of seeking help for addiction (no more "helping" them by throwing them in jail). And it would be harder for younger people to get (just like alcohol).

Heres a question for you, why shouldnt we ban alcohol?

This will be ignored, drug policy in this country has nothing to do with harm prevention.

Lets start with that in moderation it doesnt kill you, isnt especially addictive [particular emphasis on moderation there] and is a finely ingrained part of human society and has been for millenia. Heroin on the other hand gives little to no benefits at all, even drug users themselves call it a filthy drug and lament the day they ever took the stuff ... its incredibly addictive and incredibly dangerous, one shot of Vodka wont kill you but misjudging a shot of Heroin could quite easily put you into OD
to be honest i doubt different production methods would really help matters, they may make it slightly harder to OD as you know full well what youre getting but it will still cause massive addiction and can very easily be fatal, theres a good reason Dr's very rarely prescribe Morphine and when they do only for extreme pain ... that is why i think heroin should never be legalised, let alone the fact it funds terrorism, organised crime etc. etc.
By all means change the laws so people who are already addicted dont get craped on and can seek help more freely without being shamed but to legalise it would be foolish.
