Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?
Bit of a dilemma. Got a choice of the two for my first car as a 17 year old! Co-Op will do the insurance for £1250 on both, which is very decent. The cars cost around £800 each, so just over £2000 altogether is not too bad!
Which would you have, and why? Some people will say they wouldn't have both, and I don't blame them! But if you had to?

Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?
of this two, the honda! but one in saloon shape, not hatchback shape......i think slaoon of this looks better. also i would have in either 'se executive' or 'sport' spec (both available with same 1.8 engine,so insurance hopefully not so different). former with leather upholstry standard, alloy and colour coded trims; latter with appearance similar to type-r.... which i personally like look of,and want

this is a joke right?? how is your insurance so cheap...
Co-Op Young Drivers insurance. It's on these two cars it comes up cheap. On a Mondeo for example, it goes up to £1700. I wanted a Rover 75 with the BMW 2.0 Diesel engine, but that's £1600. I might end up getting that, but Toyota and Honda are known for reliability, so they're probably the best option. -
Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?is that legal?(Original post by MrWhosane)
Got a quote for a 1996 Audi A4 1.9 TDI for £1300,
the key is put 3 named drivers on and whack on the miles for them. Put 0-1000 for yourself. -
Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord? Not if you drive over 1000 miles.(Original post by MrWhosane)
Of course it is
And you'd be crazy to say you'll only drive 1000 miles.
At 1000 miles for you alone £1250 is very expensive...
£1.25 a mile, plus fuel, road tax, mot..
Cheaper to get a taxi anywhere and everywhere.Last edited by tomrw; 19-07-2012 at 22:56. -

Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?well unless of course you only intend to drive 20 miles a week the othe other named drivers will be using the car far more , otherwise it;s called fronting and you've just committed fraud.(Original post by MrWhosane)
Of course it is -
Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?Yep its fuly legal, half of the co-op young drivers customers have followed this technique lol, and you can even phone up and ask em, and they say its all legal.(Original post by MrWhosane)
How is it fronting. I'm putting myself as the main driver.
Oh and about the cars, i've had both myself in the past, and i'd say you shud go for the accord, it's drinks petrol quite a lot however with the avensis, its hard to find a low mileage one as theyre mostly used for taxi's.
The avensis are nice if you get the saloon ones. I used to have a 52 plate accord vtec se excecutive 2.0, sold it cause of the expensive road tax!. There quite nice with the leather interior etc. i sold my 52 plate for 800 quid plus a car on top. But nowadays you can pick up a 51 plate for 600-800. Dont go for that V reg, its a rip off for its price, you can get a 02 plate one for as much. Hope that helps mate.

Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?Mondeos are s***? Who on earth told you that? They are extremely highly regarded - read any review, parkers, what car, Autocar, PistonHeads - they are seriously good cars.(Original post by MrWhosane)
I've heard Mondeos are s***. That is from a load of taxi drivers though.
I'm considering a Vectra C DTi as well.
They are considerably better than a Vectra C as well.
As for engines, what sort of mileage do you do? If you do less than 15k a year you are financially better off with a petrol for any car. I would suggest looking at the 1.8 and 2.0 mk3 Mondeos. You can get a very good one for not much money at all these days. The 2.0 TDCI engine is a good one, but as with all modern diesel engines there are issues with the clutch, dual mass flywheel, EGR valve, turbos, and diesel particulate filters in later models. Servicing is key - done my mileage, not by time.
The 2.0 DTI engine in the Vectra C is very old and agricultural, and known for oil consumption problems. Same goes for the 2.2 DTI, but it is a better engine if you really must go for a diesel. You probably won't get a very good 1.9 CDTI on your budget.
To be honest, on an £800 budget for the car, I would be avoiding a diesel. These problems I mentioned above are very expensive when they occur, and you would be buying at the bottom of the market.
The 1.8 petrol Vectra is a hateful thing, you would think the performance is the same as the Mondeo / Accord, but no, they are biblically slow.
In your position, I would be looking for a petrol Mondeo or Accord near you, just go and have a look at the good ones and go from there

Re: Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord?
Comparing a Vectra and Mondeo 1.8, in base spec (LX & LS), the Vectra does 38MPG, whilst the Mondeo does 37MPG. 3bhp difference, but the Vectra is half a second faster to 60.
My point is they are very similar, on paper anyway.
I'll be doing under 10k mileage to be honest, just local run around trips. If I get a cheap diesel runaround, wouldn't it be better on fuel etc. I've got a friend who bought a 406 2.0 HDi a couple of years ago for £500. It's still running with 180k on the clock, and he hasn't spent money on it at all. That's the type of car I want. He gets 50MPG on it. He offered me it for £300, but Co-Op won't insure it.
With a big petrol car (1.8-2.2) insurance is more expensive than a same size diesel, plus tax is cheaper, plus it's more fuel efficient.
The reason I say Avensis vs Accord now is because they are supposed to be very reliable according to most taxi drivers, as oppose to the Mondeo who many have said are costly to maintain.
