Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)
Hello!
Firstly good luck to all of the candidates. You have all put forward some very good ideas regarding the future of TSR MUN.
Question to all of the candidates, what steps will you take to ensure quality and increased debating takes place at the MUN?
Secondly how will you improve the current debating fomat?Last edited by eff01; 20-07-2012 at 13:21. -

Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)I believe my proposal to hold 'Member of the Month' polls would encourage reps to improve the quality of their debate. I think more should be done to ensure representatives debate in the character of their chosen nation, rather than commenting with their own opinions.(Original post by eff01)
Question too all of the candidates, what steps will you take to ensure quality and increased debating takes place at the MUN?
Secondly how will you improve the current debating format?
I also believe that the buddy scheme I want to implement if elected will help new reps to gain advice and debating tips from more experienced members. Long term, this will hopefully ensure that all members can gain good debating skills and enhance discussions.
I hope that answers your questions

thanks for the questions.even though i havnt mentioned it in my manifesto i would also reinstate the member of the month awards and it would be more of award given to that UN reprenstive who had the most post consistently, activity and actively debated on the various UN Topics
I also intended to look into inactivity in the MUN if i get elected in the role of DSG and those members who havnt posted in some time would be delated.I would work in partnership with SG to make the MUN more counter productive and more debateable.
I would also look into a system that would help the new members of the MUN to ease them into it by introducing a peer system where they partned up with a more experienced MUN representative.
I am also looking into creating a Newbie Sub forum where the idea would be to offer advice as well as support to those MUN Representatives who have just joined up.Last edited by wizardtop; 20-07-2012 at 14:52. -

Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)I think we need a 'three strikes' system to manage absence. After a rep hasn't posted for two weeks, they should be sent a PM asking for an explanation for their absence. No response to this would need a second PM. No response to both should mean that the rep is removed.(Original post by JPKC)
What do the candidates believe should be done in the case of absent reps?
I accept some reps have busy lives and they shouldn't be penalised for missing a few days, it's the long-term absentees that should be removed to give others a chance to be reps for inactive states. -
Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)I think that the hyps demonstrate that quality debate can take place within the MUN and we need to look at why hyps are successful. Hyps are successful because they allow reps to adopt their own positions and have a little flexibility in their opinions. I would therefore look to have more frequent hyps. Senior members of the MUN can play a part because they can also debate with one another. It only takes two members to start off a debate and once it's started, then we should get some quality debating.(Original post by eff01)

In short, more frequent hyps along with encouraging senior members to debate with one another and set the example to newer members are the steps I would take to ensure quality and increased debating. It's all about the trickle down effect. Birchington's idea of a member of the month is good, but it needs to be backed up with opportunities to debate properly as well as examples of debating.
With regards to improving the current debating format, I would take the above steps, but I would certainly hope to set the example myself.
I think that those reps who have never posted in the MUN should be removed immediately (there are some reps like this - take the Jordanian rep who had little idea how things worked in the MUN and then ceased to post after being prompted).(Original post by JPKC)

However, we need to give people a reason to come here and this means a carrot and stick approach. My approach of posting one news article per day (at the very least) would give people a reason to come to the forum. With the removal of inactive reps and a reason to come here (frequent new threads), we would then be in a better position to assess the whole situation.
We should also PM inactive reps who have posted in the past in the MUN, but no longer do to find out whether they're interested in staying.
In short, immediate removal of completely inactive/ absent reps; providing reasons to come to the forum (i.e. more frequent news stories and hyps) and contacting reps who were active is the way forward and is the approach I would take. -

Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)Thank you for all the question so far, please do keep them coming in!
Thank you for words of good luck. I will be devoted to improving the activity and debating within the MUN if I get elected. I'm liking the sound of Birchington's 'Member of the Month' idea as this may be an incentive for people to post a bit more. Also, for improving activity, I will be more selective over the people who I accept into the UN usergroup. I can't remember if this is already in force, but I will look along with T_C the activity and profile of every user that we accept into the usergroup and ask for their assurance that they will be a strong and active member of the MUN community before letting them take up a country spot. I also plan to develop the idea of summits which will hopefully bring more activity to the forum, I will also urge the adminstrators to speed up the process of getting a shoutbox enabled in the forum for summits.(Original post by eff01)

To improve the debating format, I will continue T_Cs idea of posting news stories and getting every MUN reps views on the story. I would also like to get the more senior and experienced members of the MUN teaching and helping the newer members of the forum. I know when I started in the MUN that it was tough, but I think when someone wants to and is committed to becoming a country representative, I'd start up a group of people and ask them to vote some of their online time to helping others. They could also get a Wiki page and create useful guides for new members with my leadership.
I would be closely monitoring the activity of absent representatives. I would use a Google Docs spreadsheet to record my thoughts on each representative and keep records so I could refer to them when me and the SG are unsure about a member's activity.(Original post by JPKC)
What do the candidates believe should be done in the case of absent reps?
I think a warning system would be a good solution to develop - the black marks system is quite good. The SG & DSG can issue black marks to members who are inactive for certain time periods eg.
1 black mark = absent for a week
2 black marks = absent for a fortnight
3 black marks = absent for a month, you lose your MUN position and it becomes available to anyone else who wants it. -
Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)I realise that everyone has a life outside TSR however if a MUN representative was inactive for more than 14 days,i would like to know the reason why, therefore they would be sent a pm stating that there were on a warning for inactivity.(Original post by JPKC)
What do the candidates believe should be done in the case of absent reps?
If after the first pm and a couple of days later they still werent active again another pm would be sent.If after this they still didnt post or didnt respond to any of the 2 pm sent then their respective UN representative post would be given to some one else.
therefore as result of this inactivity,Their respective seat in the UN would therefore be forfeit.
I also am of the view that unless a UN representative posts quite frequenty in the MUN forums and have a genuine reason for absence then after two warning pms they shouldnt be given the opportunity to be given their MUN seat backLast edited by wizardtop; 20-07-2012 at 22:26. -
Re: MUN Deputy-Secretary General Election (off-topic)
If you had to lose your sight or your penis which would you chose?
What can go up a chimney down but not down a chimney up?
Favourite K-pop band?
Which of the other candidates would you marry if you had to?
Which would you cheat on them with?
Failure to seriously answer my questions obviously loses my vote.Last edited by ByronicHero; 20-07-2012 at 22:33.
