Violent crime lowest in 30 years
So I watched the 10 o' clock news today, and they had figures showing that violent crime is at it's lowest in almost 30 years.
I'm not sure why, but I'd assumed that crime was ever rising and things were looking bad, but surely this is great news? It did say that petty theft like shoplifting and pickpocketing have risen, but personally I put violent crimes as a priority over them (although they obviously need to be addressed).
What do people think? Seeing as there have been police cuts, and the economic situation has been terrible, this must mean that there has been some kind of positive social change?
I know that the internet certainly highlights the existence of intollerant people, but perhaps we are (in general) becoming more tollerant and better behaved? -
Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsI think it's because the criminals have gotten smarter and are covering there tracks properly!(Original post by Emaemmaemily)

Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsWhere I'm from really has no bearing on this discussion. I don't really care if you like where I'm from.(Original post by bahjat93)

I don't think such a big fall in violent crime can simply be because people aren't being caught so much. This isn't a rate in convictions, it's a rate of the crimes themselves. Even if the criminals aren't caught, a body is often found, or someone reports that they have been badly assulted. -
Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsAt least an off ten years; http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datab...-wales#graphic(Original post by NWA)
Could it be due to the fact a lot of violent criminals are in prison? Aren't prison levels at an all time high? Or maybe it's just an off year or two for murderer's etc. Who knows! -
Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsI personally think they've spelt it wrong!(Original post by Hopple)
Yeah, I hate places with tricky-to-spell names. It's as if the natives did it deliberately
My spelling is how it's suppose to be

Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsWhich spelling? You tried "Kyenes" and "kynes".(Original post by bahjat93)

Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsDidn't they say it is just murder rates that are at the lowest they have been for 30 years rather than all violent crime?(Original post by Emaemmaemily)

Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsYes murder is the one that's lowest in 30, the others are a decade (or there abouts) I think. I couldn't remember the specifics.(Original post by Darth Stewie)

Re: Violent crime lowest in 30 yearsIt could be that.(Original post by pedmond)
Its probably classifications. Rechanging what is and is not violent crime might have something to do with it. Although i'm pretty cynical. Could be straight up true
But surely that wouldn't have changed the stats SO dramatically? Especially over the course of a decade or so? I can see what you mean though; do you think that there has been any significant social change to make violent crime lower?
Maybe it's like someone else suggested, and it's because we have such a high number of people in prison. -
