why do i need an excess of Mg?

I'm writing up my coursework on the reaction of magneisum with various types of acids (mono/di/tri/strong/weak) and in each experiment i've used a 10% excess of Mg and i've completely forgotton why i needed it! thanks for any help!!

It might not have been 100% pure.

To ensure that all of the acid reacted; if there wasn't an excess of Mg there would still be unreacted acid left over at the end of the reaction.
