Help?! What OS to install on new netbook.
    I recently won this netbook : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-N102...2281008&sr=8-1

But have no clue what OS to install on it. These are the OSes I have tried so far:

    Windows 7:too slow
Windows XPain to get correct drivers
Ubuntu:slow, not very well optimised for smaller screens
    Lubuntu:too lightweight
Joli OS:Installed, but refused to recognise my wifi card - therefore useless

What more can I try. I would try and make it into a chromebook, but you can not download chrome os, just chromium, which isnt as good.

    Thanks in advance.

What edition of Windows 7 did you use? Starter should be able to run at a decent speed on a netbook like that, it's more efficient than XP in many areas. I'd stay away from Linux unless you really like tinkering with a semi-broken computer indefinitely.

I used starter, but that was really slow.

I have recently installed Peppermint OS 2 - works like a charm.

Sell your netbook. It's either trying to be a laptop and failing, or it's trying to be a tablet and failing.

Add more ram to it and Window 7 (and most other things) will be much better.

    Sorry mate but you're wrong.
I've installed several linux distros in every netbook i had in my hands the past 3 years and there is bigggg difference between linux and windows 7,xp or vista (lol).

There are distros that are newbie friendly as Mint/ Ubuntu/ Xubuntu/ OpenSuse/ PCLinuxOS.

On my netbook (HP mini 2140) I use Joli OS and PClinuxOS, both of them runs smoothly.

Windows 7 Starter is a joke (come on people are you insane?)

The problem with Joli was that it wouldn't register my wlan card - i couldn't get past the first stage.

I ended up back with 7, I would have stuck with xp but intel decided to screw around with thier driver and not release a version for xp that supports 2d and 3d rendering.

But ur right - Linux is A LOT faster

Because Joli OS is based on ubuntu 10.04 LTS you can find support on ubuntu forums,(it's the same thing) from there someone will help you with your problem.
    It's easier that you think...

Windows 7 have better support on drivers etc but if you install an antivirus and 2-3 apps like Skype MSN etc, your little netbook will take ages to boot...
And don't forget registry problems, .dll problems, viruses bla,bla,bla...

In your position I would give a try to Xubuntu 12.04 LTS or Linux Mint 13.

    Good Luck...

I'd go with Linux Mint using the MATE window system (not Cinnamon - though it's the same disk install, so try both) if you still feel dissatisfied with 7's performance. It's got the normal Ubuntu repos plus an extra couple of Mint repos for styling/core updates, but without the huge bloat from running a fancy GPU intensive window manager. Plus, the driver support is a little better than with Joli, because it's based on Ubuntu 12.04. In other words, it's a middle ground for Ubuntu and Lubuntu.

The thing is that it was Joli specific - Joli didn't recognise my card, but Ubuntu did, which doesn't make sense

There are inconsistencies to everything. 12.04 has far better support for stuff than JoliOS. May be worth waiting for the release of the new Joli platform as they'll probably update JoliOS to compensate now that the new LTS of Ubuntu is released.

Right - it is just without WLAN, joli can't even get past the first screen

It can, but the procedure is a bit different. I've had similar issues on previous machines. Alt + F1 opens a terminal in JoliOS, from which wget, apt-get and other commands can be used.
