    Magic Circle or magic circle
    Hi all,

if I write about Allen & Overy, Freshfields etc. is it ok if I say 'magic circle law firms' or do I HAVE to capitalise it as 'Magic Circle law firms'.

    Thanks.

I wouldn't write that phrase in any application, at all...

The fact that you've waited 5 hours for an answer on a forum when you could have simply checked on Google speaks volumes.

I don't see why you would include that, considering that it will add nothing to your application, and may raise an eyebrow at other firms.

I don't think anyone cares either way, it's not the name of a company or anything.

Personally, I think it makes you sound like a pretentious idiot and there's no real reason to use that phrase - each to their own. I imagine HR cringe each time they read it, though.

Hey thanks for not answering my question at all and just writing all your pretending-to-be-witty comments. If you have nothing intelligent to say then don't say anything.

You don't have any idea why I wanted to ask this question and in what context it comes up in my application. Yet you feel obliged to lecture me on what I should or should not say. Very intelligent. But that was not the question. (A pretentious person, dear v3n0m06, according to the Oxford dictionary is someone who is "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than he actually possesses". If you think about it carefully you will realise that it is describing you, with your comment to my question. )

As for searching on Google, I have, dear bramz 19. It comes up both ways. Good thinking for posting before checking.

You've already got your answer, but I've only just come across this thread. I would've capitalised it as 'Magic Circle' because it comes across as being a title. A bit like the 'Big Four' in finance and so on.

    Really?

You're attempting to land a top job with one of the most prestigious law firms, and you're asking this question?

Again, no, dear Jack93o. I only want(ed) to mention my work experience at an MC in an application submitted to a non MC firm. My issue is (was), I want to highlight that I was working at a top firm, but do not want to mention its name, as that would be inappropriate in an application for a spot at another firm. Hence MC, a good compromise I think.

Mentioning the name is not inappropriate at all. In fact, mentioning the name could be a bonus! However, if you screwed up in the work experience then maybe not. Mentioning the 'Magic Circle' on an application form for a (presumably) smaller firm is far more cringe inducing. It could give off a sense of pomposity as well as confusion as why you won't refer to them. Most people will state they did work experience at 'X law firm'. 'Magic Circle' or 'MC' just seems a bit too colloquial.

If you ignore advice and use it, then so be it. Don't let anyone here stop you!
