THE FINAL - Battle of the apps - Pick your winner
For over a month we ran the biggest competition the site has ever seen, as we asked you for your app' ideas with the chance to win a FREE degree with the Open University. After collecting all the entries, creating a shortlist and running two semi finals on the site, we are down to the final two. Two app's to battle it out for the free degree.

There is a chance the winning app' may be put forward by the Open University for development (for many reasons this only a possiblity, but it will be considered )

Voting is open until 1pm Monday 23rd July.

Read the app's below and get voting!

    My Degree Stats
Description: "At the beginning of an academic year, the student/user inputs how much the year is worth overall to their degree, percentage-wise.

When an assignment for a module has been marked, they input their result in percentage-form, along with how much said assignment was worth within the module, and how much the module was worth within the year (they are given the option to input this in terms of credits, in case they're rubbish at maths!).

The app, taking into account any previous marks submitted by the user, calculates the marks they need to achieve or average in future assignments/years to achieve each classification for a) the module, b) the academic year, and c) the course in its entirety."

How it will aid student life: I always spent AGES trying to figure out what marks meant in terms of how I needed to do in other assignments, and whether or not I was on track for my target grade. I would have loved to have had an app to figure it out for me!

    Food For Thought
Description: Recipe app for a student budget which provides ingredient prices at each major store (tesco, sainsbury's, waitrose, etc). Provides simple, affordable, balanced meal recipes, including prices and calorie counts and nutritional inormation. Perhaps including discounts when recipe ingredients are bought together.

How it will aid student life: Encourages students to eat blanced, healthy meals, while allowing them to budget their meals easily, and providing prices. Instead of relying on pot noodle, students would be more inclined to eat full meals, while sticking to their budget. Including discounts would make it even easier for students to save money, while eating healthily.

My Degree Stats: Simple, effective idea that could be built in a day or two.

Food for Thought: Nightmarish database will require constant updating and a web connection to use.

If one of these is going to win, I'm going to vote for the one that causes the devs the most ball ache if they have to build it. Not that I'm bitter my app idea didn't even make the semi finals. :awesome:

Just a quick question since I don't watch The Apprentice, did their app idea incorporate recipes and nutritional information to help healthy eating?

apps for the degree stats one already exist, and the other one was probably copied off The Apprentice. I refuse to vote.

Agree completely The My Degree Stats is pointless since universities have a spreadsheet or similar on the blackboards that you just type the marks in and it tells you what you're on, what you need for every classification and the same as this app 'idea'

The other is a complete copy of Nicks idea from the apprentice, wonder if whoever 'had' the idea watches the apprentice and if Nick had another idea they still would have food for thought as an 'idea' lol

Just seems funny that I heard better ideas than any of the ones in the semi finals, wonder who even thinks these are useful

Are you seriously going to give a free degree to somebody who just stole their idea from somewhere else? Not good.

The food one seems kind of pointless. You can find endless amounts of recipes all over the place, yes telling you prices at places is kinda cool, but overall doesn't seem to be very original.

Re: THE FINAL - Battle of the apps - Pick your winner
I'm with all these, the Food app in my eyes cannot win or even take part in the competition as it is a blatant copy off The Apprentice, all being with a few glossed over bits to make it seem less obvious. The other is already in existence so isn't needed. A quick Google search brings up http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1604756 which leads to http://cleveret.net/?page_id=29 . Then there are already many similar apps on the market.

So basically, its one stolen app idea against one app that is already in existence. Tricky, so null vote. There needs to be a 'null' option.

This competition started off really well, but the lack of advertising to vote in the semi's (which I didn't even know were taking place) and the decision to let two apps into the final stages of the competition when they are both inappropriate in their own ways for entry.

Can I just say I don't think that the finals / semi-finals were advertised very well. I'm sure they were only visible in the OU forum, which to me didn't seem right. It should have been made to be seen across the website since it's such a bit competition.

Both terrible ideas, surplus to requirements for anyone with half a brain.

I'm sure TSR had better suggestions than this.

There's no 'fair' winner. Either someone who copied an idea off TV wins or someone who copied an idea from an app store. :fuhrer:

In a shocking turn of events it is revealed that the user who submitted Food for Thought actually was Nick from The Apprentice.

I agree with the others. The food app should not have been entered into the competition. This seems to be a huge oversight on part of the competition organisers.

No it is nothing like that app.

That app was you'd look up a meal, and you could buy all of the recipees together in one for example Sbaghetti Bologneise - buy
    Buying:
    Sbagheti
    Garlic
    Tinned chopped tomatoes

    etc.

In this app there is no mention of buying ingredients all together
