Am i being over TAXED??? help
it was my first week of work and i am a part time worker. I only do 25 hours per week. I am a full time student who has just completed a-levels and going university in september. i have found this job at booker wholesale cash and carry.

My first weeks pay was £163.00 i was shocked when i saw income tax reduction at £32.64 . The NI contribution was fair enough at £2.58.
i was just wandering is this too much tax. almost 25% of my income?
are there no laws for full time students?
if so, when and how will i be able to claim some if not all of the tax back?
    thanks for any help

Sounds like you're on the emergency tax code, if I'm right you need to ring up the tax man and get it changed, you'll be paid back whatever was taken that shouldn't of been.

You're a full-time student so you shouldn't get taxed at all, no?

And also people need to stop confusing emergency tax with the normal tax code. Tax code 810L which is the standard will take 20% off, emergency will take 20% off too, it's only called emergency tax in some cases because they're not sure about your previous history, ie they don't have your p45

There's no laws for full-time students but there is a personal tax-free allowance which everyone gets (unless you earn over £100k per year I think) which I think is something like £8250 per year, but definitely over £7k per year. But as someone has already said you ring up the tax office and they change it so that you pay no tax until you have earned your personal allowance (which is highly unlikely on part-time hours) and then you'd get taxed from then on. The tax you've already been charged will be refunded and paid with your next wage payment (or the one after if it's sorted just before your next one).

i am too on a part-time job and i also get taxed 20%. this is because HMRC haven't yet recieved confirmation of employment from my company (apparently it can take up to 6 weeks to process, i'm on just over 4 weeks into employment), so i'm on a tax code '0T' - which basically means i don't get any allowances so am taxed the basic 20% from all my income. check your tax code - if it's 0T ring up the tax office and enquire.

did you give your employers a P45/P46 form?
