Discussion about medicine applications and medicine.

A week at a Vets could be helpful?
So I did a week's work experience at a Vet's a while back.
I do know that it is okay to mention this on a personal statement for medicine but you have to be very careful about which parts you mention that'll boost your application.
What can I write about??
Ps. I experienced a lot of surgeries and surgical preps etc -
Re: A week at a Vets could be helpful?
They're less interested in what you've seen medically and more about what you've observed clinically with patients, so whilst you do experience some of that at a veterinary practice it's completely different to when your subject can actually understand what you're saying and doing.
I'd recommend, instead, getting further experience with a GP or at a hospital shadowing there. Also try volunteering and providing care in the community, these are the true attributes they're looking for in medical applicants. -

hey there are many things you could write about. you could make some comparisions similarities and contrasts with human and animal medicine which back up your choice to study human medicine over animal medicine. you could mention the importance of using sterile surgical equipment and stopping the spread of bacteria and infections. you could try and relate the area of medicine you are particularly interrested to the work experience, for example watching animal surgery helped to develop your interest in human surgery and watching the vet try to diagnose an animals condition through clinical signs and things the owner tells them about the animal helped to develop your interest in the diagnosing of patients in hospitals and in gp surgeries using clinical symptoms and description of symptoms from patients etc.
hoped this has helped a little, this is just my idea of things that you could use that could relate back to human medicine. good luck with writing your personal statement

I was asking about the week at the Vets because I really don't want it to be a wasted week.
I also volunteer at the RSPCA, how could I relate that to Medicine? (I have some ideas - interaction with customers and importance of teamwork) -
Re: A week at a Vets could be helpful?Thankyou! That helped quite a lot, I'm just trying to squeeze all the med related stuff out of it and find a way to make it sound really worthwhile(Original post by alice456)

Re: A week at a Vets could be helpful?
I actually don't think it's that bad an idea, assuming you have space on your PS. Not all patients can communicate verbally, think advanced dementia and young children. In addition you have to have the same communication skills with the pets owner as you do with patients. It's all about how you can demonstrate what you have learnt and how it's transferable.
I appreciate my application was a long time ago (11 years!) but I did the vast majority of my clinical work experience at a Vets and it didn't cause me any problems! -
Re: A week at a Vets could be helpful? Why did you do an attachment with a vet if you're applying for medicine?(Original post by Sarcastic_Sazza)

Re: A week at a Vets could be helpful?
Thankyou for all your help!
I think I'll leave it out for now and focus on other things but if I feel like I could still add a certain number of words to it I may include it and talk about the difficulties of communication and vet to owner contact.
Thanks again.
