Re: Too many comedians are purposely controversial without being funny these daysAny artform should be encouraged to embrace controversial subjects. That's how we move forward, by challenging the status quo. It doesn't mean they'll get it right, or that they'll say anything worthwhile, or that they wont cross the line between challenging and bullying (just look at Gervais - a massive idiot and a bully).(Original post by Top Banana)
Controversy is never needed in humour. Just look at the comedy greats such as the Two Ronnies or Morecambe and Wise. Their humour was relatively 'safe' and still managed to be hilarious.
You're absolutely right that great comedy doesn't need to be controversial, but it would be terrible if none of it were. -
Re: Too many comedians are purposely controversial without being funny these daysLol at the time of broadcast, Crossed Lines was probably outrageous.(Original post by Top Banana)

Re: Too many comedians are purposely controversial without being funny these daysI agree, I get the impression he tries to offend as many people as possible and forgets that its a joke and actually has to be funny...(Original post by Bellissima)
jimmy carr is the best, he is controversial but also the funniest. i used to find frankie boyle funny but now he is just controversial... not funny with it..
Its a tactic he has developed, its how he stays in the public eye etc and publicises his name. Why pay for adds in the paper when you can just say something awful and are guaranteed to be plastered all over them? -
Re: Too many comedians are purposely controversial without being funny these daysit is mainly with his stand up, frankie is still hilarious on panel shows.(Original post by Hanvyj)
