Eating in Glasgow
Hello there!
Yesterday I found out that I will officially study at University of Glasgow. I will probably choose private accommodation, a property from UNITE-STUDENTS (Buchanan View * 35 Calgary Street, Glasgow or Kelvin Court * 30 Yorkhill Street, Glasgow) and I've got a little question: I have no idea how to cook, does someone know where to find a canteen / cafeteria around? Something like a buffet, which gives you the opportunity to choose from a variety of food.
I've also thought about Wolfson Hall, which has full breakfast and dinner included, but it's a little bit expensive, around 156 pounds per week.
Thank you very much!

I appreciate! -
If u eat in uni itself as a student then it wont be that expensive as I understood(Original post by cfizzle)
Why don't you just learn how to cook? Eating out all the time will be very expensive - so expensive in fact, that you'd probably be cheaper paying extra for catered halls!
But anyway u r right
Cooking skills are really useful lol

Re: Eating in Glasgow
Yeah that's a point but I want to focus more on my studies without having the concern of when should I eat, what should I eat and so on. It would be much simpler if I could find a place where I could eat good food three times a day. It would take a lot of time to learn how to cook because beside omelet and french fries I can't do anything else.
Thanks for your answer! -

So... you mean that at the university there is a restaurant which is special for students? -
Re: Eating in GlasgowIf you went for a cheaper residence because of this, then you'll spend the money on Uni food anyway, if you're going to places on campus 2/3 times a day.(Original post by hiddenul)

Re: Eating in GlasgowAnd in what does the uni food consist of? And where it is more specifically located?(Original post by Norton1)

Re: Eating in GlasgowPasta and stuff, sandwiches. Just...food. There are canteens in both of the student unions and University run places in the Fraser Building, Main Building, John MacIntyre Building and several others.(Original post by hiddenul)

They don't really do dinner, so if you refuse to cook then you'll need to buy ready made out a shop.
The upshot is, learn to cook between now and September and you'll save loads of money. -
Re: Eating in GlasgowThank you for your answer. Can you estimate a price for a typical breakfast / lunch?(Original post by Norton1)

Re: Eating in GlasgowIt depends what you're buying, but in the QM Union a plate of food for lunch would be £3 - £3.50 and in the University places probably £4-£5.(Original post by hiddenul)

Breakfast you're probably looking at a roll and sausage would be about £1. I think you might be able to get a bowl of porridge or something somewhere. Breakfast out is really not a big thing in this country. -
Re: Eating in GlasgowNo one lives in the QM Union, anyone can eat there. You're thinking of the QM Residences.(Original post by hiddenul)
Alright so it doesn't matter whether I live in QM union or not. Anyone can go there, right? -

I dont wanna waste my time on cooking as well so there is a letter that I received :
The university itself has a hospitality service that has a number of cafés dotted about over the campus- in the library, in the MVLS college, and at other main locations. You can get hot food/ main meals in some of the bigger canteens, and things like sandwiches, soup, fruit, tea and coffee etc. in the smaller ones. Prices are reasonable- roughly £3.50 for a hot main meal; £1.60 for soup and a roll; about a £1 for a cup of tea or coffee. Here is a link for you to read a bit more:http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/hospitality/forstudents/
On top of that, the two student unions have eating facilities, which are both located on campus. They are both also very reasonably priced, and serve hot and cold meals and snacks.
Here are the links for the two unions' eating facilities:

http://www.guu.co.uk/yourunion/daily_services
Finally, the university is less than only a 5 minute walk away from a whole host of cafés, restaurants and supermarkets on Byers Road and Great Western Road that provide food throughout the day (and night! There are a number of 24 hour shops.) for a whole range of prices. Student favorites in Glasgow are Subway for a cheap, freshly-made baguette, or Ketchup- a burger joint that has student meals 2-for-1 everyday, so you can enjoy a large Scottish Venison, haggis, or a regular beef burger for an average of £5.00!
HOPE IT HELPS

Single best purchase since starting uni. Learn to cook, cook huge amounts cheaply, and freeze in portions. It's idiot-proof
