    it's a ball/party type event at the start of the academic year at university, specifically aimed at 'freshers' or first years. It usually revolves around live music/clubbing/drinking etc...

    At Cambridge, it's (pretty informal) black tie - guys can get away with a black suit and a bow tie, but some go all out because they want to be sure they're not "under-dressed". :p: I'm not sure about elsewhere...

    Part of our fresher's ball was with the London Unis and a boat ride. Let's just say that drunk people on a boat didn't end to well

    Possibly it will be slightly less formal at my uni (UCL), but I don't want to be under-dressed, so will probably wear formal clothes
