A2 English AQA love through the ages...
    Hi I'm new to this
I was wondering if anyone is doing English and has a reading list for the summer. I generally enjoy reading but I have so many books to choose from!! For our coursework unit we have set texts which are Jane Eyre, Don Juan and a Shakespeare play called Midnight Summer's Dream. Has anyone got any suggestions for wider reading for example I already have Wuthering heights and Lady Chatterley's Lover at home but I'm so indecisive!

    Ello =)

For me the set texts where Pride and Prej and Much Ado About Nothing, for the wider reading i chose A Room With a View with the question being about changes of hearts and opinions. It might have been because of the recent tv adaptation but Birdsong was really popular with a few people =)

Id probably say choose the book which you tend to enjoy/understand better. I chose Room With a View primarily because i loved the film and the book was great too

    Hey,
I'm posting at stupid o'clock because I can't sleep due to results day panicking (already) haha don't worry you have all this to come. Anyway I'll list all of the books I read, I felt really prepared for my exam and I'm hoping I did well so I hope this will help you too!

    Coursework Texts:
    Much Ado About Nothing
    A Room with a View
    Captain Corelli's Mandolin (Brilliant btw)

    Wider Reading:
    Jane Eyre
    Wuthering Heights
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
    Romeo & Juliet
    A Doll's House
Dangerous Liaisons (had to study in French, but again amazing)
    Skirrid Hill
    John Keats poems
    Edgar Allan Poe poems
    Birdsong
Fifty Shades of Grey (if you ever quote stuff like this refer to it as modern fiction)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
    Top Girls
    The Handmaid's Tale
    White Teeth
    Lots of Shakespeare's sonnets

My mind's gone blank, but I read loads, pretty much anything can be linked into love or the lack of love if you can justify it sufficiently, just remember to have a bank of quotes memorised, or even partially memorised, I'm pretty sure they never check to see if it's perfect haha. Worst case scenario use songs as poems, I retook my AS to improve my C and my mind went blank so I used a song from my favourite band saying it was a "piece" from a Dutch writer, and I ended up with a B!

    Good luck hope this helps!

Wow great list! Lol seriously I'm glad that worked for you. How many quotes for each piece shall I have and do you know how I can categorise them? Or shall I not bother until September? :/

Re: A2 English AQA love through the ages...
When I read each one I was bearing in mind common aspects of love, like romance, family, betrayal and just wrote a list of quotes from each chapter, I ended up with loads then just narrowed it down to 3 or 4 for each text.

The best revision technique we used was to create three big mindmaps for prose, poetry and drama, each section represented a different aspect of love and we wrote down the text, author, date and a quote. Hope this helps

Yesss this definitely helps! When you mean date do you mean when it was written or when you quoted it? Thanks this actually gives me an idea of how I can start, at first I was like this is just going to be another year of AS which was just chaos.

Re: A2 English AQA love through the ages...
I meant the date when it was written, that way you can start to refer to context, which I have to admit was awful in terms of this year's exam so honestly make sure you know loads of context as you never know what the exam will throw at you

My english teacher actually gave me a list of possible wider reading books, but I'm a bit confused as to whether they are possible 'set texts' or suggestions for 'wider reading'... bit confusing.
Can anyone help clear up what you use each text for?
I can give you a list of some of them if you'd like?

Hahaa, did you use any quotes from Fifty Shades of Grey in your exam? Bet that would have cheered up the examiner!
I studied Top Girls, Handmaid's Tale and Skirrid Hill as my main texts for AS, so it'll be great to use all them again! Though I've probably forgotten all the important stuff!

I'm going into A2 this September and doing this course- is it a good one? Did you enjoy it and learn a lot?

You must have been given 3 texts to read over the summer for ur cwk right? With exceptions for the Shakespeare play we are not reading that until September.

The reading list ur teacher has given is most likely wider reading. So u get a choice of what to read, I myself have got one but I didn't know what to read bcoz there was so much to choose from. Right now I'm reading pic of Dorian Gray and might start Wuthering Heights after. (This is just my wider reading for now).

In the end whatever books u decide to read you should write up like the plot and stuff for ur revision and point our the themes of love.... I haven't done this yet since I haven't even started my personal statement :0

Well, we were given a Shakespeare play (Orthello) and our novel, Wuthering Heights, and I'm assuming they'll tell us the poetry when we get back.

Yeah, I figured it must be. It was just confusing as some of the things on there are texts that I know other people are studying as their set texts.

Feel your pain about personal statement! I'm not even 100% about the subject I want to do!

Yeah same. But ur set texts can still be used in the exam so its all good. I was looking at Wuthering Heights the other day and that book is going to be so hard to follow. Have u started it? Tell me how you find it.

Yeah it's a play and believe me it is a lifesaver of a play. I've yet to do an exam paper an not need to use it; including my summer one

And dm your email address and I'll send it you and steal my quotes and add to it, but then forward it to someone else next year as it really helped (3 people got A's in January with it)
