MA International Relations at King's College
Hello everyone,
I'm considering applying for the MA International Relations at KCL and am after some information on the following modules;
Concepts and Methods in International Relations
Theories of International Relations
Does anyone know what type of assessment these modules have?
Is it by exam? or essay/coursework?
Also, any other feedback on the course would be much appreciated.
Many thanks -
Re: MA International Relations at King's College
Hello,
I'm going to study MA International Relations at King's this September. I haven't had any detailed information about modules yet but I would guess from the course page, "Continuous assessment by essay; examinations and a dissertation" (and the general pattern of assessment methods in these sorts of programmes) that most modules and almost certainly the core modules would be assessed by one or two essays and a final exam. Can't be sure though! Might be worth contacting the Arts and Sciences Admissions people to find out for sure? -
Re: MA International Relations at King's College
Both of those modules are 50% essay, 50% exam. Your dissertation is separate. There is quite a lot of focus on ethical theory, which you might not get elsewhere. It's worth looking at other MAs in the War Studies department, as most have the same or similar choice of optional modules. From what I've heard from others, the Terrorism one seems quite fun (which sounds odd to describe it!), Science and Security- very employable, and IPS for those interested in international law/diplomacy.

Re: MA International Relations at King's College
@Applyer, King's and UCL are best universities in that lineup. I'd be inclined to choose one of those two if you get offers. Make sure you choose which programme is best for you though as IPP and IR are very different in the detail. You might also like to check the interests/expertise of the staff members in the relevant departments as this will make a difference when it comes to modules available/what you write your dissertation on.

Re: MA International Relations at King's CollegeReally? What kind of ethical theory? (i.e. is it the stuff of Mervyn Frost, or does it engage with the current milieu of contemporary analytic political philosophy, or with just war theory? etc.)(Original post by eilidho)

Also, out of curiosity, is 'Science and Security' as difficult as it sounds? I'm from a background thoroughly rooted in social philosophy, so wonder to what extent I could meaningfully engage with the module?
