Is this a good deal for £649? (Sony all in one computer)
    Hi all

An electronics retailer near me is doing a closing down sale and an item caught my eye.

I spotted a Sony all in one PC which was £799 down to £699. the salesperson offered to knock a further £50 off for me, which would bring it to £649.It is one of these:

    http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vd-j-series

The particular one I have been offered for £649 has 4gb ram 500gb hard drive, intel i3 processor i think. I dont know what the processor speed is.

I should also say that the item for sale is not brand new; it is an ex display model, ie it is the one out on display on the shop floor, I was told it will be given a reset back to ordinary/factory settings before being sold to me.

Can anyone advise me or give any opinions on this computer/deal?

    My reservations are:
    * it has no hdmi port
*the fact that it has been used by other people ie its an ex-display model
    * I have looked at reviews of this computer

    http://shopping.reevoo.com/search?q=vaio+j+

Some rate it very highly, but a few have mentioned that it has a noisy fan-my current laptop has a noisy fan and I hate it.

It normally costs £799 if you buy it new directly from Sony. It has touch screen, which I personally think is a gimic and wouldnt use.

    Thanks people.

£649......your essentially paying for the touchscreen which you called a gimic.
It's easy to tell, a i3 processor, at that price you should expect at least an i5, a 4b of ram, should expect much more...........storage doesn't matter to be honest, 1tb comes up on that kind of price easily isn't too expensive for them to have 1tb. You should also expect a dedicated graphics as well to be fair.

The touchscreen won't come to use until Windows 8, theres a thread on it, how the new interface, etc will only be good on a touchscreen but isn't anything better than Windows 7.

You can get much better performance for £649.

i3 processors are okay. Just okay. I'd expect more.

The only upside to these machines is that they look "elegant". But they can't give you the performance of a standard tower.

    So all in all, no.
Unless you so very much care about what the machine looks like, and not so much about performance, and don't mind paying a lot, in which case you should consider a mac.

P.s. Noisy fans tend to be the result of the case not having much space for ventilation. Like in laptops, because everything is so compressed together. Hence another reason why getting a full tower is a better option.

I do like it a lot because of the 'neatness' and look of it.

It is a pity it does not have HDMI in/ HDMI out.

Unlikely that you'd find an all in one with an HDMI inlet. Reason being that those things tend to have on board graphics rather than graphics cards. Yet again, I'm not sure why you're hung up on an hdmi port, since the idea of this "all in one" computer business is that you don't need an external screen.

To be fair your better off getting a tower, and if you have a screen, etc already at home, you got more to spend, so you can get a pre-built tower with a few ports for multiple screen which can handle major games on max.

I have just realised that currys sell this computer brand new for £699:

    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/sony-va...85806-pdt.html

I would like an HDMI port to attach it to much 42" tv for occasional use.

HDMI in may be good for games console(though I wouldnt use that)

Sony do have a higher spec one with HDMI:

but its a bit too big I think (24") and is expensive

There are mixed opinions on this in the reviews. A few people have said its unpleasant and like being at the airport, a few others have said it is quiet.

Mate you're just paying for the brand in all honesty. For £649 you could easily get an i7 tower with a good graphics card etc etc.

Just doing a quick search in 1 minute I came out with something that you can get for £699.99 + shipping, which is a very powerful performing desktop which will last a while : http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/c...uter-p-97.html

Not sure what you're looking for but the point is, shop around. Sony doesn't equal good value for money, put specs over brand always.

I'd disagree - he's not paying for the brand, he's paying for the 'all-in-one-ness'.

    I agree.

Also the fact that it is touch screen must put the price up a lot.
