    Brookes Freshers 2012 Q&A
I created one of these for last years freshers and thought I should create one for this years freshers too!
I can answer any questions you have about the university in general and Oxford as a city. However, please don't start asking me about your courses since I am a third year law student so I can only answer questions about that course in particular.
Feel free to ask me about freshers week, societies, halls (I lived in Clive Booth) and other things you really want to know!

I'm sure some other Brookes TSRians will be around to help answer your questions too

    Any recommendations?
Is there any way to get around it and go to clubs etc?

Well you can still join societies and hang out with flatmates in halls , but with night clubs you wont be allowed in due to the entry age of 18 plus with ID. But you can still go to Pubs with friends and only have alchohol if you purchase a meal, as long as an 18 plus is with you.

Lots of societies have weekly meetings and im sure you'll find one you like. Everyones experience will be different, but im sure even without clubbing you'll still enjoy uni.

The hospitality course is great, many of my friends do it/ did it.

I changed from Tourism because it was half business/half tourism and I preffered the business side of things (did a BTEC ND in Travel n Tourism at college)

Yes at the end of 1st year it is very easy to change degree you just need to know what u want to change to and the tutors will help you.

Hey guys, i will be studying computer science this year, its lectures are held at wheatley campus. However ive been told not to live at the campus there, as its too far out from town. Im not too bothered whether the room i get is ensuite or not, all I wanted to know is which i sites are the largest/busiest and most lively. Could anyone try and rank them in order for me?

    1. Cheney Student Village
    2. Clive Booth Student Village (Ensuite)
    3. Clive Booth Student Village (Non-Ensuite)
    4. Warneford Hall
    5. Crescent Hall

Not sure what to pick for my last choice, as I previously said I dont want to live in wheatley and harcourt hill is the other side of oxford so it will be ages to get to my lectures.

Is it worth applying to the Clive Booth Student Village(Post Graduate Centre), I assume no freshers will be there which I do not want.

    I'd personally put them in this order;

    Warneford Hall
    Crescent Hall
    Clive Booth Non Ensuite
    Clive Booth Ensuite
    Cheney

Warneford is close to gipsy lane campus and within a 5min walk of the buses to wheatley; Crescent Hall is on U5x bus route so ideal for wheatley
Clive Booth halls are a bit of a walk down from the bus stops to Wheatley
Cheney is a 50 week contract so a bit pointless since most people tend to go home over the long summer break.

Some people put it in some other order mainly because they will be at the Gipsy lane campus, for Wheatley classes I live in Slade Park. and Would put a reccommended order for wheatley classes with Slade Park, Paul Kent and Crescent Halls in a top 6 with Warneford about 3. Lady Spencer hall is ideal if you dont like getting up really early since you can get up and be in lecturers within 10mins.

How far is the Wheatley bus stop from Clive Booth En-suit halls? My lecturers will be at the Wheatley campus -- Just wondering how long it would take me to get from A to B...

You will need to walk about 5-10minutes to the London Road Bus Stop

You then get the U1 Bus to Wheatley (20-25mins)

So in total it should be about 30-35minutes and in bad traffic at most about 40.

    Hi!

That's really nice of you to do this I have a question:

Would you recommend getting a wristband for Fresher's week and would you recommend going to the Welcome Garden Party? I won't be living in Halls but I want to get to know as many people as possible of course

    Ta!
Only get a freshers wristband if your definetly going to all the events.

The Welcome Garden Party is worth it so you can meet people, and enjoy the first few moments of uni with others in a similar position.

Also make sure you go to freshers fair (in the first few days of freshers week)

    Hi!
Just wondering... Can we then get into the individual events without the wristbands? And, can we buy those beforehand? £49 for partying is way too expensive for me
    Thank you for helping!

I presume you can pay on the door but the individual events might cost more than the £39 offered for a wristband. Previously people have been able to pay on entry.

For a more definite answer go on the link below and ask Brookes SU, they will confirm how you can pay for this.

Thanks! Being as social as I am, I'm doubting I'll go to all of the events anyway

I bought the wristband last year and ended up going to ONE of the nights... so totally wasted for me :P There's so much going on during freshers, so I just felt as if I was limiting myself far too much with the wrist band, haha.

    Hia im in Slade.

We have a small Co-op in Woodfarm (an estate nearby), theres also a Londis Corner shop 5min walk up the road.

Waitrose and Co-op, Iceland etc are in Headington (20min walk / 5min bus )

Tesco is on the U4 bus route (10min)

Slade is a 5-10 min bus ride to Headington Campus. (20-30mins walk)

To get to harcourt you would need to get a bus to Headington or Headington Campus and change to the U1, so would take you upto 1hr maybe more in bad traffic.

    Any other questions just ask.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out with a few questions I have...

I found out that I will be living at Westminster Hall at the Harcourt Hill campus. It looks like a nice campus, but I am slightly concerned because I will have to travel to Headington campus for my studies.
Will this be a problem for me or is it fairly easy to travel from one campus to the other?
Also, any information on the facilities at Harcourt Hill, sports facilities, bars, nearest supermarket etc. will be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

Harcourt Hill is on the U1 bus route so you simply get the U1 from Harcourt to Headington for lectures.

Harcourt Hill is the university's base for one of the main sports complexes

    http://education.brookes.ac.uk/about/facilities/ (has more info)

Via the U1 bus route you will be in Oxford City Centre in no more than 5minutes, that has many supermarkets.

The campus has a bar, computer rooms and stuff .

Nearest Shops other than in oxford are in Botley (20min walk)

For further info see the Welcome booklet from Brookes.

Thanks for the links, it does sound really nice!
I've heard though that all the students studying education will be given accommodation at westminster hall, and I was wondering if I will be at a disadvantage if I'm a minority (I'm studying biomedical science). Would it be better to have people on the same course as you living nearby, or won't this make much difference?

    Thanks again
