Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodation
I'm staying in student accomodation, beneath my window all the smokers smoke. And because the way the rooms are designed they get very hot so I have to have my window open so I end up getting smoke in my room 20 times.
I am asthmatic and I worried about my health.
I asked my student accomodation about this but they said because its a public place so there's nothing I can do about this...
The other rooms at the front also have this problem, we have our windows open all day.
There are also students smoking weed in the rooms which drifts out their window into our windows.Last edited by jewellui; 23-07-2012 at 06:20. -
Re: Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodationIs it actually a public place (i.e. the street) or is it just a communal area belonging to your student accom? If it's the latter they can ask people to stop smoking there. Either way you could suggest that they designate an "official" smoking area which isn't next to any windows.(Original post by jewellui)

It sounds like the sort of thing that your student union would be interested to hear about and they might be able to help you in dealing with the accomodation provider? -
Re: Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodation
They still shouldn't be smoking directly outside the rooms though, surely there should be a designated smoking area well away from the buildings because of this. I'd stick a sign on my window or something and get the others underneath to do it too :P it probably won't work but some might get the message. Surely the accomodation office would be able to do something, especially as it's affecting/could potentially affect your health?

Might as well have the text on the sign say
'please go out of your way to smoke here, and bring alone your friends, whilst you're at it play loud music on your phones and bring some drinks, and don't you dare forget to leave the empty cans all over the floor'
because this will be the net result of placing any sign in your window, just saying. -
Re: Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodation
To be fair you will be getting only a small amount of exposure to any smoke, so it shouldn't be a big problem but I can understand the worries re. astham, it might be worth a chat with the GP.
Weed wise - you will get that in any halls, again very limited exposure and again if you were to tell accom. they'd be unlikely to do anything; but in saying that someone below me in my first year was using a bong, managed to set the fire alarm going and that was the end of their time in halls..
What Fish has said is definitely an idea, worth speaking to your student's association as they could look into setting up a specific area for smoking or something.. -
Re: Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodationThis is true, but as a non smoker being subject to other people's smoke would annoy me, regardless if it's only a little bit.(Original post by daisydaffodil)

Re: Smoke coming from outside into my room student accomodation
The accomodation is very small, it doesn't look like there is anywhere specific they could designate, I guess it is not designed well.
I think the exposure is significant, 20 cigarettes x roughly 3 mins a day...
I will speak to the university.
