GCSEs for a science based course.
I know man of you will say 'gcses don't matter wait till A Level!' but if you want to get into a top uni they do matter!
I think these are the minimum grades I will get but they could honestly stay the same/get higher or whatever as for some (especially eng. lit) I have no idea for.
A*A*A*A*AAAABBB
I wasn't that bothered about getting a few B grades before I came on the student room and saw how everyone said if it wasnt A*/A then it's not good enough, so I'm just asking if they're decent enough for a top uni?
Possible Bs for French and DT:Food and eng. lit but eng. lit could range anywhere from B-A*.

Re: GCSEs for a science based course.
Once again I will hop onto the bandwagon and say A-Levels are the main factor for getting into uni. The most 'useful' GCSE is English as it shows you can write and understand texts/context.
Just focus on your current subjects i.e. GCSE's then A-levels then degree. Oh and answering your question; sure those grades are good. Good for a-levels as you need to show your sixth-form/college you're capable.
Oh and TBBT FTW!
Edit: Can I guess you want a degree/job in the field of Physics or Biology...? Seeing as you watch TBBT.Last edited by themancunian; 23-07-2012 at 12:00. -

I was always interested in doing a science degree before TBBT but when I saw it, oh how I hope I find a real life Sheldon cooper! XD

Re: GCSEs for a science based course.
What matters about the GCSEs is that you preferably do well in those subject you're going to continue with. So lets take physics as an example (seeing as I know most about that) you would need good grades in Physics, Maths and perhaps the other sciences. Having good GCSEs in the other subject does help, but it's not as much of a necessity. At GCSE I got a B in English Language, but because it had nothing to do really with my Astrophysics, it didn't matter.
So for now, focus on doing well with your AS levels, because they really do matter. They are what the universities see first and base some of your worth on. If you want to do Physics but you only got a C as AS, then they might pass over you. GCSEs help confirm that you've been high achieving in the right subjects for a couple of years, the AS levels are indicators of your current abilities.

Just try hard and keep focused! -
Thank you, this really eased my mind as the subjects I've probably got Bs in have no real significance to science. You have stopped some of my insistent worrying!(Original post by Helsy)

Re: GCSEs for a science based course.Well... I'd say based on your predicted grades (if you got those) then you should be on a good track for doing medicine. But medicine is a whole different league when it comes to applications which I can't really properly advise on, at least not subject wise etc. But if you get those grades, I think you're well on the way for what you want.(Original post by techno836)
okay i second the OP here im not too sure on my GCSE results either when i compare around ....
for medicine at leeds or manchester
(they're in my sig )..predicted though
Just be prepared for working very hard for the next couple of years to get as good A-levels/IB as possible.

Re: GCSEs for a science based course.Triple science, maths and english. All that matter at GCSE really! Get them at the A* you predicted if possible. Try to get the others to A* too obviously but make sure you actually have some fun. You can cram in last minute revision for GCSE if your semi-intelligent and pay attention in class and still come out with A*s(Original post by ChloeBazingaa)
.
As everyone else has said, it's more about A Levels but if you are certain you want to focus hard on GCSEs too, here is my advice: Take an array of subjects... english language, english literature, maths, double award science and religious studies will probably be mandatory so in your 4 pool options, perhaps take triple science, a MFL e.g. french or german or spanish, take history and also something you enjoy e.g. pe/religious studies/sociology/philosophy or even another language!
Then, obviously for A Level take the sciences
Chemistry and maths probably being the best subjects to take science-wise to open doors (physics and biology and further maths are more 'course-specific'.
I hope that helps and is somewhat accurate

Wow thank you for your advice, especially on the A levels, but I probably should of specified that I'm a year 11 awaiting results on the 23rd, so sadly there is no more I can do(Original post by Occams Chainsaw)

I do English Lang, lit, math, triple science, re, ict, history, French, and DT Food.
I already have A* in eng lang and math, though for the sciences I definitely think I got an A for physics, then Chem and bio it's possible for A* though I'm pretty sure I've got A.
wish I had put a little more effort in there to secure A*s for them
Exactly what you said for a levels is what I have chosen xD
