Re: Full time student working 40 hours? How on Earth can you expect to go to university when you're at a full time job every hour of lectures, labs, tutorials etc? Do you have a Time-Turner?(Original post by blank_smile)
Ok, so I have secured a full time job and a weekend job. I am going into the 2nd year of a respected uni. SECOND year is tough, will I struggle with my job and uni work? Or will I manage? Did this happen to you? How did you cope?

Re: Full time student working 40 hours?
You won't cope with a full time job, a weekend job and uni too, you'll have to attend lectures (probably in the day) and will more than likely need to pull multiple all nighters to reach deadlines, this won't be possible working 40 hours a week.
I worked 20 hours a week in my third year, but anymore would have been far too cramped -

How will you even find time for uni if you're working 40 hours? How many hours do you have at uni a week? -

Have you stolen Bernard's watch? -
it's maybe possible if u are a one in a billion genius who has a natural gift in your discipline and can ace exams without revising. If you are an average joe like me i think you'll find it hard. as oters have said, how will you do your studies around the 40 hours you work?

Re: Full time student working 40 hours?Having a full time job entirely invalidates any legal claim you have to being a full time student. You can be either a full time student or a full time worker, not both.(Original post by blank_smile)
Someone reassure me!
How can you go to university when you're working 12-8, when everything at university will be happening at those times and you'll miss absolutely everything? When you come back from work everything will be over.
Bottom line: You can't do it, so don't even try. It's nothing to do with having the energy or commitment; it's not actually being able to learn, do and see anything at university when you're working, because there is not enough time. The university is not going to put on special night lectures, labs, tutorials etc for you because you were working.Last edited by Flyteryder; 23-07-2012 at 17:49. -
Re: Full time student working 40 hours?
I know of one guy who did this. He did engineering (a few years above me) and worked full time as an engineer. Large parts of the course, especially piping and process modules, were quite easy for him since he'd been doing it for decades. He did his honours project/dissertation on a real life project he'd been doing at work and got excellent marks for it.
In fact I also know another guy who did it in my year now that I think about it. He was again working as a full time engineer and already had a three year ordinary degree in another, related subject, so he again found large parts of the course quite easy. He also did his dissertation on a project he'd been doing at work.
Neither attended any lectures and instead took all of their weeks off during exam time to cram. It worked for them, but is unlikely to work for you.
