Laptop for architecture course recommendations
Hey, I'm going to Sheffield uni in September and need a laptop. I know that this gets asked a lot but reading through the threads the laptops suggested are either no longer available or are in excess of £1000, which I just don't have.
Im thinking I want at least a 15" screen, at least intel i5, i7 if possible for the processor. A separated graphics card of at least 512mb, I think il need over 4gb of ram and I don't know much about computers but was recommended NIVIDA GeForce graphics card...if thats what it's called....
I want the cheapest for best performance, so don't care about it being bulkier and not so pretty as long as there is a good battery life and it's durable as it will have to last me the 4 years of my degree....
i have like £500 saved up and then whatever else I can pull together but I can't afford anywhere near £1000 for certain. If you could suggest some laptops I would really appreciate it..also no to macs, I've used them before they are very nice but regardless you are adding to price for brand and design which I don't have the money for. Thanks in advance. -
Re: Laptop for architecture course recommendations
Don't know much about laptop pricing but I think you're asking for a lot for a 15" laptop with an i7, 512mb dedicated graphics card, over 4gb RAM and good battery life.
I'll search around and update the post if I find anything and I'm sure others will be able to help, but it seems a hard push. You're asking for high specifications AND good battery life. Normally for budget laptops something has to give, and that is often the battery life. -
Re: Laptop for architecture course recommendationsAs your doing architecture, I expect you'll be using some pretty intense design software........what your looking for is essentially something which can handle everything pretty smoothly, so i7, 8gb of ram and a dedicated graphics card.(Original post by Silentseaglass)

Re: Laptop for architecture course recommendationsIs it the Dell 15R special edition? If so that is a reasonable deal for the specifications offered. It could be worth checking the battery life as I know traditionally Dell's are awful in this dept.(Original post by Silentseaglass)
Oh I understand I'd be pushing towards £800s for an i7, so far I've found one that seems okay. The Inspiron 15R...it's £649, I was wandering what the catch with it is since its so much cheaper than anything else with the same specs...
However, if you do have the £800 budget you can get a Sony Vaio with your listed specs plus the 8 hour battery upgrade.
Also look at Lenovo Thinkpads within that price bracket. They're easily the best Windows laptops one can buy.Last edited by PVisitors; 23-07-2012 at 20:59. -

For the price you're looking at, this is gonna be your best bet. Mine just came and my initial impressions are good, runs quite a few mid-intensive games without trouble, bf3 is downloading now (should run medium at least as my desktop does and is by far a lower spec).
