Buying a MacBook for University?
Okay so I decide I am going to buy a MacBook for University with my 1000 pounds interest free loan. The cheapest so far that I got for a 13inch MacBook Pro is 783 pounds excluding VAT which means I will have to pay 939 in total. :/ So I am just wondering is there a way of getting a cheaper price? Is it possible to get a student discount anywhere?????

Re: Buying a MacBook for University?
You can get a student discount from the apple store. http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/education_routing
You have to actually be at the University though, so you'll only be able to do it come September/whenever you start. -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?I think an acceptance letter from the university will do, if you go to the store.(Original post by katehlouise)

Re: Buying a MacBook for University?Really? So If I go in Apple store with a confirmation letter from the University that I have applied to they will give me a 15%dsicount? And I am not just talking about any MacBook, I am talking about the 13' Pro. I saw it on this website for 939 but I am still looking.(Original post by iammichealjackson)

I have to be in the University compound or you mean attending University? I clicked on the website and tried it lol didn't work. -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?lol no I am not interested in that. If they were giving 70pounds back that would be great.(Original post by Picture~Perfect)
Apple don't really do discounts/sales, not online anyway but if you're buying it for university I think I saw somewhere on here an advertisement that said you can get a £70 iTunes voucher

Re: Buying a MacBook for University?:O did you have to pay VAT/TAX on top of that? And if you did get it for this price, I really wonder what size was this Mac?(Original post by cfizzle)
If you go into an Apple shop to buy it you get a 14% discount - I got my £999 MacBook Pro for £859, as long as you show a Matric card
-
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?Yes, i am from the Uk. And that's incredible that it includes VAT. That means its very reasonable. And awsome that it is a 13 but is it a pro? ^^(Original post by cfizzle)
Well yes, you do get VAT on laptops
but that price is including the VAT. Are you from the UK?
It's the 13 inch one, with the lowest memory (which is still very high) -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?(Original post by cfizzle)
Pretty much everything you'll ever buy, will have the VAT already added to it, if it's something that gets tax put onto it. Just for future reference! So don't ever worry about tax in the UK
Yep it's a pro, but it's the now 'older one'. Since they just brought out the new one like a month ago
But they're the same spec and same price:
http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/hom...ook_pro/select
So £999 - 14% = £859 (including VAT
)
Lol@ "older one" and thanks for the advice. -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University? This is why I asked a question about it in another forum entitled "Is this a wise choose concerning my spending on rent?" and so far I have been doing some reconsideration because of some answers.(Original post by CUFCDan)
Why go and spend a grand on a macbook for University? -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University? If you have the money and can afford to spend it on a laptop without sacrificing your overall budget for university then purchase it. Please don't believe the staunch windows and Mac users who can not be objective. For the £859 you're getting what you pay for; it's not the case of a Windows laptop offering you every single thing for half the price. This may be the case for specifications, but when it comes to battery, dimensions, weight, customer service/aftercare and other features such as the superior keyboard and trackpad. You're in essence buying the best designed laptop you can get. If your budget can afford it, it will be a very good laptop for you and last you for your entire studies and more. Same can't be said for some cheaper windows OEM laptops which often have a life span of 2 years.(Original post by ANewStudent)

And if you go into an Apple store and show your UCAS conditional offer letter, you will be given the 14% education discount and a £70 iTunes/App store voucher. However I recommend you buy online via the education store because you get the free 3 year warranty online which unfortunately can not be offered in store. See below for the link which you can use to get your 14% discount.

Re: Buying a MacBook for University? You don't have to see the point because she didn't ask for it. There are scores of pro and cons regarding the Apple-Windows battle. She has already decided to purchase a Mac, simple as that.(Original post by CUFCDan)
I don't see the point. I got on swimmingly with a £300 Acer Aspire. Really you need Word, Google and a USB and that's about it. -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?I recently just bought a MAC for uni this september, and all I did was go to the apple store with a confirmation letter of my unconditional offer to uni, and i bought the 13 inch MAC boom Pro along with apple care protection plan (an extended guarantee) as well as a 70£ app gift card to buy all the essential apps, and all for under 1000 pounds!! it came to like 989 or something like that!(Original post by ANewStudent)
Really? So If I go in Apple store with a confirmation letter from the University that I have applied to they will give me a 15%dsicount? And I am not just talking about any MacBook, I am talking about the 13' Pro. I saw it on this website for 939 but I am still looking. -

There are two types of discounts: the normal student discount (what you mentioned) and the 'Apple on campus' discount. You only get the 15% if you qualify for the 'AoC' discount (the normal student discount is slightly less) and the 'AoC' is only available if you purchase from the Apple online store via the university network.(Original post by amii12)

You can't just walk into an Apple store and get the 15% (even if you university qualifies), you have to purchase it online. What you got has most likely been the normal student account + the gift card and Apple care due to the Back to School program.Last edited by Sir Fox; 25-07-2012 at 22:02. -

University, or other
Higher Education establishment.*
*Note: You can only use our University (HE) or College (FE) stores when connected via your campus network. If you are off campus you can still order by calling 0800 072 1154.
You can call instead. -
Re: Buying a MacBook for University?Yep, forgot to mention that. amii12 still stated that she went to an Apple store and bought it there which theoretically should not be possible.(Original post by admbeatmaker)
