Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast?First it was(Original post by Politricks)
Well, many Muslims I know do put up a holier-than-thou attitude which they normally wouldn't have during the rest of the year.
Now it is 'many muslims I know'Ramadan is the period where Muslims put up a 'Holier-than-thou' attitude for a month.
When will it become 'these few ****ers I used to hang out with'?
If you try and reverse any faster you'll leave skidmarks everywhere so relax -
Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast? There are Muslims who wouldn't have normally prayed, but start praying during Ramadan, and if they continue praying even after Ramadan has finished - then that's what I call a true reform.(Original post by ZA.1)
Well, Ramadhan is about self-reform and getting closer to Allah, so it's no biggie that people who don't usually pray in other months make an effort during Ramadhan.
However, many Muslims I know who don't normally pray, but pray during Ramadan, stop straight after Ramadan has finished - that's hardly a reform, it looks more like they pray because there's more social pressure put on them to do so. -

Yeah I feel for Muslims right now. Its boiling right now, up to 30 degrees outside, I'm sure their God would rather not see his people suffer, no? -
Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast?Great deduction from a minuscule, ethnocentric sample and insufficient evidence. The fact that it happens more than it should is all I'm putting forward.(Original post by Straight up G)
You can guess whatever you'd like to, but my more educated guess is that people don't actually do this very much. -
Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast?I meant some* Muslims, of course I didn't mean every single last Muslim...(Original post by Straight up G)

I know it's an integral part of Islam, but could you ever bring yourself not to do it? Do you ever think that you just don't want or just can't force yourself to do it some years, then don't do it? How would you feel if you didn't fast? How angry or annoyed do you think Allah would be if you didn't fast? Do you think Allah would forgive you if you weren't sorry for not fasting?
Before I get negged, I'm not trying to be offensive. I'm not saying that Islam is wrong or fasting is wrong; I respect that you have a religion and that fasting is a part of it. I'm just genuinely interested in sensible responses.
Edit: TELL ME WHY I'M GETTING NEGGED. I've tried to be as respectful as possible. I haven't said anything bad about Islam.
I am Muslim and I believe we have free will to do whatever we like. We know Allah is Most Merciful, Oft-Returning and very forgiving. Allah(SWT) forgives again and again and again and again. All good comes from Him and all bad comes from our own soul. That is what the Qur'an teaches. And I believe it makes sense. We don't think if someone breaks the fast that Allah will suddenly cause them die or suffer. No, not like what you are imagining. But we are given this guidance to either accept/observe it or reject/not observing. Allah says every man strives for himself, if he does good, he benefits, if he does bad, it harms none but his own soul. This is the teachings of the Holy Qur'an.
So don't imagine Allah being mean and aggressive and arrogant because some of us don't choose to observe ramadan because whatever we strive for is what we will get. Understand?
I don't think you are being arrogant. I mean understand where you are coming from. You just want to learn about the Islamic faith concerning Ramadan and its obligations.
Heres the verse from the Qur'an.
Surah 29:6
And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.Last edited by ANewStudent; 24-07-2012 at 15:39. -

?
Idiot brain go look up the reasons behind fasting. Then you'l be grateful to say at the least(Original post by Jordan_1)
Fasting is stupid. So glad Im not religious.
A reason for fasting is to remember those who are in need. For eg, India, North Africa, greater temperatures than the UK btw. These people suffer greatly, and I've seen it with my own eyes. Fasting is nothing compared to them over there.(Original post by Jack93o)

Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast? It's not a miniscule, or even ethnocentric sample. Insufficient evidence, for sure, but there's no way of proving this either way, instinct is all I can go on. I agree, it will happen more than it should (which is not at all), but that's hardly equivalent to what you said, ie 'many'.(Original post by Id and Ego seek)

Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast?So you're saying muslims would still fast 29/30 days in a row if it wasn't compulsory?(Original post by notsure)
Politricks are you even a Muslim? What your saying is absolutely false. Muslims fast in the month of ramadhan because it's prt of our religion. People fast because they want to and people are not pressured into doing so. I personally live the month of ramadhan even though sometimes I feel hungry and want to break my fast I don't! Simple because I've chosen to do so and I feel good!
it's silly that you say we're pressured bcos if that was so we could just pretend were fasting but eat, therefore I believe your point is wrong mate.

Re: Muslims, could you ever bring yourself not to fast?Fair enough; not like my sample is any better: none of the Muslims I know even fast(Original post by Straight up G)

Just be glad I didn't say 'all'

Making people suffer is what all gods do.
Learning how to have self-control is not a suffering. It is only a suffering for those who can't handle it. -
