    non allergic dogs ?
Hey guys. We have decided to get a dog for our family. Thing is my gran is allergic and so we have been looking at hypoallergenic dogs. My 14 y/o brother is thinking of a golden labradoodle. But i think its a girls dog and i hate poodles. I tend to think its not a real dog. So any ideas on which hypoallergenic dog is good ?

Pretty much this, nobody has actually proven that any particular breed is significantly less likely to affect someone's allergies. Your best bet is to look at breeds that are small, short haired and don't shed or slobber much to prevent the mount of allergenic stuff they leave around the house, and invest in a bucketload of piriton.

Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, certainly not a "girls" dog.

If you dont want a dog that casts, consider a Lhasa Apso.

And if you're just wanting a dog to be some sort of status symbol, then you dont deserve a dog.

Any cross breeds like labradoodles have a 50/50 chance of getting the labrador coat, or will shed like one. So they are not hyper allergenic like some will want you to believe.

Most people are allergic to the dander of dogs will all produce so there's no guarantee that a so called 'hyper allergenic' dog will stop you or family members from being allergic to it.

    This is interesting http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...85S1BS20120629

But if you're still insistent, a low shedding breed would be best, like the schnauzer, not a girly dog at all. You can get them in three sizes, miniature, standard and giant and even the miniature doesn't look girly at all.

My dad and brother have dog allergies and we have a patterdale terrier, b/c they shed less they tend to be better for people with allergies. My dad and brother dont have the problem they would living with other breeds of dog.

Why isn't a poodle a "real" dog? You don't have to have its fur cut into a puffy style.

And they are up there with Border Collies and German Shepherds in terms of intelligence.

EDIT: As someone has mentioned above, Schnauzers are also recommended for people with allergies. Though they're probably not manly enough for you

I have a poodle. My stepdad felt the same as your brother but realised a dog is a dog. PLUS a purebred poodle will look similar to a 'doodle' if you leave it's hair long all over. I suggest you look into the background of poodles .. Particularly standard (large) poodles and you will see tremendous working heritage . I am hoping to train my next STD poodle in the next few years in working trials which to the layman is similar to police dog work. Infact I have a security dog trainer friend who knows a security firm which has a couple of black STD poodles, clipped down - they look very similar in body shape to dobermanns but are easier to train!!!
Schnauzers are good ... But my heart breed is the hugely under rated poodle!!!

Please don't be bought by 'hypoallergenic' m designer dog breeders. A respectable breeer will only tell you the truth

I keep mistaking labradoodles for portuguese water dogs, trimmed poodles and lurcher mutts, only sometimes would I recongise it as a labradoodle, since they could look anything in between or closer to one or the other or none at all!

Does this look like a girly dog to you? https://files.nyu.edu/ahk291/public/...std_poodle.jpg
    or this?

They look like real dogs to me. If it was fashionable to do poodle cuts on labradoodles you'd think they were girly dogs. It's just the hair cut, they're really smart and hardy dogs.

Edit: they do look similar since, you know, being half poodle and all http://www.labradoodleoftheday.com/files/labra1.jpg
and they can look pretty girly http://www.madaboutdoodles.com/photo...rden-large.jpg
