You might be able to persuade the university to give you more money.

Halifax do allow an interest free overdraft up to £3000 for the duration of your course plus one year.
They won't hand over that to someone in first year though.

Are you entitled to a scholarship from the university?

So I'm assuming that you don't get any maintenance grant, the idea being that your parents earn enough to support you financially at uni. So ask your parents if they are willing to help- there is often some stigma towards people who get help from their parents, but like you, I won't be getting any grant either so my parents will be helping me. Without parental help, I wouldn't have enough to live on. It's not anything to do with being spoilt, but it's instead of the grant others get (who are often those who criticise those whose parents help them financially- kinda funny really)

Nuclear Fusion- it's not that easy i'm afraid, my dad's job is very close to being made redundant, and we dont have spare cash floating around anyway, they wont let me starve but they cant support me like other parents over the threshold can :P

In that case, here is statistical evidence you were something of an aberration; http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....php?t=1699835

So my statement would hold true for 90% of people...I'm happy to make statements on that basis.

Add your uni's bursary on to that, and don't you get a normal grant (or does the NHS one replace it?)?

Now its summer you should find a job asap. Easier said than done I know but there are recruitment agencies looking for people to do work for summer for their clients. If you work enough from here until you go then you'll have an extra £1000 at least. You may have to ask your parents to help out as it is pretty ridiculous having so little money for your living expenses. While you're there a job with the uni or a place in the surrounding area on evenings and weekends could go a long way. You've got a little time so make use of it.

Personally I'd not recommend the overdraft you could spend months clearing it after Uni but its there as an option just its best not to get too deep into it or you could find interest racking up on it after a long while.

Is there no way you can get a flat halfway between the two and commute?
Commuting isn't free, unless you walk.

No, but it might be cheaper than having to arrange more accommodation.

I was 90% right. Good enough for an incredibly high first. Happy with that. She can go in and see if she gets the full three grand. Only then will I be wrong.

I imagine the majority who get 3 grand straight off will have some sort of credit history, plus lending is likely to be a lot tighter now than when you started.

Lolwut, close to 25% of those who took part in the poll didn't even ask for more. Besides, your initial statement was that a £3000 interest free overdraft was *******s, which it isn't, after that you specified the first year, which it isn't. Still wrong.
