Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?On 30000(Original post by ruby321)
hey just wondering, what threshold do your parents earn more than so that you get less loan? My dad earns about £30,000 but I only get £4500 student loan apparantly and that seems a lot less than everyone else? i'm not sure if its right?
You should be getting
4330 loan plus 2340 grant -
Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?really are you sure? Is that how much your getting and are you studying in london? I have a feeling that I somehow didn't put something in correctly so I'm getting the wrong amount... my grant is like £1300 and my loan is only £3500 and everyone else whos parents earn more than me seem to be getting more loan and grant... (sorry to hijack the thread lol)

Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?
Without reading all 4 pages, can I suggest joining the Nurse Bank as an HCA?
The ward/hospital/area you're signed with will ring you up when they're short-staffed, and most Banks can nearly guarantee a couple of shifts a week, so you can basically work to a schedule that suits you, while gaining relevant experience

Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?
It is perfectly possible to have a term time job during the first couple of years at least! The workload is no higher than many other science courses. You also won't have placements to worry about yet. Before you start university you can apply for a bank HCA job at the local hospitals, which will terrific experience for you. Look on the NHS jobs website. Enquire about whether there is a chlamydia screening programme set-up. I know a med student who worked with it, again enhancing her knowledge and skills. You will get very long holidays after years 1 and 2, so should have plenty of opportunity to work and to save some money in case things get tougher. Your dad hasn't been made redundant yet and if he does, you'll get more money yourself in terms of loans and grants.

Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?That's a shame! It's about 10 miles. My son only had to do about 5. He would have cycled 10 though, if he'd had to, depending on how cyclist friendly the route would be.(Original post by rock_climber86)

My apologies -
Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?
Thanks for all the replies, supportive mum: my course is 60% placement for the whole 3 years, so i'll be worrying about that very soon unfortunately! Will definitely be getting a job, i just meant that i wont be able to do evenings or weekdays etc, i've been told the workload is pretty steep and i'm not exactly a genius so would rather be poor but ontop of my uni work
Thanks for all the replies! -
Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?I'm not sure whether this applies to all unis or just the one I'm going to, but there are no bursaries available for students on an NHS bursary. You can claim travel costs back from the NHS bursary providers but only if you have to travel further than you normally would to uni and if youre on a higher income you don't get any money until you hit a specified threshold.(Original post by OU Student)
Do the uni / NHS pay for travel costs to placement? -

I must have got the wrong end of the stick! Sorry! I thought you were going to do medicine!? (Looking back, I see that when you wrote 'medical placements', I assumed it meant for medicine). I've never heard of anyone other than medics having to have additional accommodation whilst on placement for other courses, people just travel to them. Must admit, I did think it a bit odd that you were talking about an NHS bursary! What course are you doing? If it's nursing or midwifery, you can certainly join a bank as an HCA and work on a casual basis.Last edited by Supportive mum; 27-07-2012 at 10:40. -
Re: Big problem, £374 to live on for a year!?Did I say lend it all in the first year? Ehrm...no, afraid not. That would be slightly silly! You...may need some money for the other 2/3? My plan is to use it as a safety net if I need to, working summers in-between will give me a bit anyway.(Original post by Norton1)
I believe I said the plan was *******s. The plan was to ask for a three grand overdraft in first year, so I'm not moving the goalposts at all. As I say - and this is all I'm going to say on the matter - if she asks for a three grand overdraft she won't be getting it. Incidentally if you exclude those who didn't ask for three grand it doesn't change the percentages that much.
If you decide to do all the sums and work out the exact percentages it changes it by and you decide it's significant, do keep it to yourself. Throat slittingly dull.
She won't get three grand. On that basis: *******s plan.
End of.
Don't assume things so quickly ;D
