Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professor
Well, interestingly enough, this is making headlines.
I've heard plenty of Jews say this, but one of the first time I'm hearing a Christian say this (who remained a Christian);
The head of the religion department at Luther College in Iowa recently argued that Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, was in fact, a Muslim.
“‘Was Jesus a Muslim?" asks Prof. Robert F. Shedinger in the beginning of a book he published this year entitled Was Jesus a Muslim?" I will answer with a very qualified yes."
In a recent interview Shedinger also defended his controversial thesis explaining that a Muslim undergraduate student had sent him on academic odyssey that culminated with him asking himself "Was Jesus a Muslim?"
"Even as a Christian I have to answer yes to that," said Shedinger, who is the head of the religion department at Luther College in Iowa.
Shedinger also argued that Islam is a better fit for Jesus since it is not a religion but a “social justice movement.”
"I had to rethink what Islam is… I came to the conclusion that it was a social justice movement and I think that’s who Jesus was in the first century so I conclude Jesus is more like a Muslim," he said.
The vast majority of scholars, historians, Muslims, and Christians date the birth of Islam to 622 ADE when the Prophet Muhammad claimed to have received visions that were eventually compiled into the Koran. Jesus, on the other hand, is believed to have existed more than 600 years earlier, at around 0 BCE.
A spokesman for Luther College, a small liberal arts school affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, told Campus Reform on Wednesday that the administration stands fully behind Shedinger’s scholarship.
“The administration is very very comfortable with the proposal, with the book, and with what his statements about this situation are,” said Jerry Johnson, the school’s Director of Public Information. ”[T]he ground he is breaking with this book is not anything exactly earthshaking.”
Johnson added that Shedinger’s thesis had not stirred up on any controversy or opposition on campus where “the members or our religion department are very respecting and have great respect for each other’s work.”
Campus Reform was unable to contact Prof. Shedinger in time for publication.

More Non-Muslims agreeing with the Islamic view of Jesus. Which, although doesn't prove anything in particular, it's still interesting to say the least, especially coming from a Xtian.
I know people are going to hate (since this is a thread on Islam
), but for those who are sincere, learn about Islam from Muslims (who actually know their faith inside out), the door is always open to seeking knowledge.
ps. For those who are confused, we believe all the Prophets were Muslim (those who submit to God) and Islam was first practised by Adam(pbuh) and first preached by Noah(pbuh). It only came down in its final form with the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh), who was the seal of the prophets.
Second edit (for the not-so-bright)
Muslim = a person who has dedicated his worship exclusively to God
Islam = making one's religion and faith God's alone (strict Monotheism)
All the Prophets, are considered "Muslim" who practised and preached Islam. So "Islam and Muslim" are not something that came in the 7th century, it came long before that, since the time of Adam(pbuh). The word "Muslim" and "Islam" are not considered titles, but definitions. It may be that Muslim during the time of Moses(pbuh) meant the same thing as a Jew. However, for the sake of not over-complicating and since we don't know what word was used during the times of other prophets, we say Muslim, since all would've meant the same thing.
All preached and practised strict Monotheism. Not all came with the "Shariah" (God's Law), and those that did come with it, would've been accustomed to the people of that specific time and place.
Anyways, this is why the Qur'an says;
"And this (submission to Allaah, Islam) was enjoined by Abraham upon his sons and by Jacob (saying) 'O my sons! Allaah has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except while you are Muslims." [Quran 2:132]
"…Who will be my helpers in Allaah's Cause?' The disciples (of Jesus) said: 'We are the helpers of Allaah; we believe in Allaah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (i.e. we submit to Allaah).'" [Quran 3:52]
Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters.” [Qur'an 3:84]
The point is, Islam/Muslim mean submission to the One True God. Thus we believe, Jesus(pbuh) did not preach trinity or anything like that, but rather Islam. Same with Moses(pbuh) etc.
OT: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One" (Deuteronomy 6:4)
NT: The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. (Mark 12:29)
NT: “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. (Mark 12:32)
Q: "And your God is One God: There is no god but He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. (Qur'an 2:163)
Q: “And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We revealed to him (saying): Laa ilaaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allaah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)” [Qur'an 21:25]
Believe or don't believe, hopefully this will allow you to better understand what is meant when we say; "Jesus is a Muslim". And if people want to see more of a link, then I would recommend watching this video.Last edited by Perseveranze; 25-07-2012 at 18:05. -
Re: Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professor
Sigh.
Jesus wasn't a Muslim. If he even existed he was a heretic Jew. There was no such thing as a "Muslim" in the ancient world before Muhammed came down from the cave and proclaimed himself a Prophet ordained by Allah via the Angel Gabriel.Last edited by S-man10; 25-07-2012 at 23:34. -
Re: Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professorIslam=social justice? LOL this professor has spent so much time in the Ivory tower that he has lost touch with reality. Somebody should tell him that Islam means "submission" and that there is little room for social justice in Islam, just look at the position of women in that religion.Shedinger also argued that Islam is a better fit for Jesus since it is not a religion but a “social justice movement.”

Jesus was actually a pastafarian.
I look forward to your next thread "Jesus was a Pastafarian, claims TSR user"
I feel I'm a more reliable source than a Prof at the College of Nowhereseville U.S.A
And the bible used to also say that Jesus was a pastafarian before it was corrupted.
Adam was the first pastafarian, and pastafarinism was first preached by Noah.
////
Basically what Muhammad preached but replace pastafarian with "Muslim". -

Re: Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professorYou too, explain yourself.(Original post by toastysandwich)
Basically, Mohammed (pbuh) was given the seal of the prophethood, which means there were more prophets before him. This means that JESUS (ISA) WAS A MUSLIM. Islam did exsist before the last prophet people. End of story!!

Life expectancy is around 80~ years. Are you seriously going to spend your years preaching hate towards a religion you don't even care about on a site full of hormonal/overly sensitive teenagers?
Because if so, I pray for you.
On an actually related note, though, I think you'll find that the 'core' of all abrahamic religions is pretty much the same (i.e. the main beliefs), therefore I don't see much point in trying to label Jesus as any one of the three. At the end of the day, he was a man sent from god with a message and we should all respect that (if we're believers, that is) instead of spend time and effort trying to label him with one of the three. -
Re: Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professorNo no no, you've got it all wrong, Jesus started the Church of the Invisible Pink Unicorn, he himself wrote 'Hoofprints' through to 'Holy horn' in the IPU Bible.(Original post by Norton1)

Re: Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professorSweetheart, I don't give a damn if you think I was a Muslim or not. If you're a sensitive soul who can't bare to see any criticism of Islam I suggest you hurry along to an Islamic forum where all criticism is banned.(Original post by PrismaticCore)
