I don't see equality as being a good thing if it destroys a historic institution with a positive influence on society along the way.
For goodness sake, the premise of what you're saying is that marriage is being destroyed in the first place. And that is strikingly inaccurate. It is being 'changed', in the name of equality.

Unless of course, you would call similar 'changes' like the incremental reform of the House of Lords as destroying a historic institution. Culling the number of hereditory positions was a move towards equality. The House of Lords is a historic institution. You don't see that as a good thing then, do you? That is what your logic would conclude, isn't it?

Equality and fairness trump history and tradition every time. You cannot deny someone equal treatment before the law, because something has always been done in a certain way. Instead, you change that thing which obstructs a universal equal-footing, and make society better for it in the process.

I'm gay but I agree with this, I hate Pride, why can't those involved have some decorum and decency?
I'm also gay, and have an equal lack of respect for indecency.

Yes, quite. No matter how many posts from H&R you drag up that are well over a year old, I will remain sure.
For someone who is "straight", you don't half go on about gay stuff. I'm gay and I don't think about gay stuff as much as you?...

Ahh, as others have mentioned. I think we know why

It's okay TUFC. I know this must a frightening for you:

    It says "Civic nationalism".
An adjective describes a noun. It cannot contradict it. Anyway, if your nationalism was inspired by a common citizenship and shared civic institutions then you certainly wouldn't be a Scots nationalist.

I think although obviously this is a victory for civil rights groups, it may be more of a political move for the SNP. By leading on this issue they'll appear the 'progressive' party in Scotland which could secure them the young voters they need to retain power. I'd like to think that they've done this purely out of respect for civil rights, but I'm a little cynical on this one.

Either way, it's a good thing they're doing, the SNP has gained some respect in my book.

... you don't have to get married in a church. You can have marriages in register offices, marquees, hotels, bars - but I think that any religious gay people (yes, they exist) should have the right to marry in a church if they want and if that church is willing.
If no churches were willing would you still want them to marry gays?

I hate David Cameron for wanting to legalise gay marriage. Remind me why we abolished capital punishment?

Obviously I'd still want them to but that's my opinions; but as long as they respected the right of gays to marry, I'd respect their right to refuse it if they had a good enough excuse (I don't think religion is a good enough excuse).

I think freedom of religion is a good enough excuse.

Why do people care so much. Gay marriage wont affect straight couples and straight people. As a lesbian I thinks its great that I am now allowed to get married and I don't think we should have to live according to a book that was written hundreds of years ago. Most people who are homophobic are gay, I was homophobic until I met my partner and I realised that I was gay.

It would be a redefinition on a level with saying that 'blue' now refers to the colour we currently call 'red'.
No, it really wouldn't. Marriage in the UK is the union of two people in the eyes of the state (religion has been irrelevant in marriage for over a century, religious institutions can only perform binding marriages with the acceptance of the state). Gay marriage is an amendment to this to permit the union of two people of any sex in the eyes of the state. It is not a redefinition.

Although I'm fine with it, I'm curious as to why gay people really care. Ultimately the only substantive difference it will make is changing a word, unless potentially the religious element is introduced and you're a member of some weird church that allows it.

As far as I'm concerned, gay marriage is just squabbling over a pointless heteronormative standard. If people want it, fine, but other than that I really don't see a great deal of point.

Most people who are homophobic are gay, I was homophobic until I met my partner and I realised that I was gay.
    lolz.

They abolished prescriptions fees and tuition fees, rid their NHS of privatisation, and now they're the first part of the UK to have gay marriages. They're better than us; this is why we can't have nice things.

    Haha, this.
    It's OK, tufc.
That's lovely but where does the money come from? It must be fake, just like Labour.
