    Having second thoughts!!
Hi, I'm meant to be starting university in October. I'm meant to be doing a geology degree, but I'm having second thoughts and wonder whether I should be doing biology instead. I'm really confused and indecisive about the issue. My exams went badly so this may be causing my doubts. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been in the same position and for any advice. Thank you

When you pick your 3 subjects in first year then you could see if you can do biology as one of your choices and if you like it you can always switch in second year. I had doubts about my choice but I've definitely made the right choice

Think this might actually be more of a thing in Scotland.

It's a Scottish thing. Students in England pretty much just study their degree title subject, with some leeway to explore other subjects through elective modules.

Consider why you picked geology in the first place. You must have had pretty good reasons to apply for it, so do those outweigh your new reasons for wanting to do biology? Don't let your exams cloud the issue, particularly since you don't have your results yet so you may well be worrying about nothing. Remember that starting a geology degree doesn't compel you to finish a geology degree - there are opportunities to transfer course once you've started if you really don't like it, or to reapply.

I enjoy Geology, but I don't think I have a passion for it. I picked it primarily because it was meant to be my best subject. Is it likely I'll be able to transfer course once there if I need too? Thanks.

It can't be guaranteed that you'd be able to transfer, since it depends how many people are on the biology course and whether any spaces remain. If you're certain you want to change course you're better off doing it soon, before your uni tries to fill those bio places through Clearing. The other option is that you may have exceeded your offer, in which case you'd be eligible for Adjustment and could apply to other unis for bio without immediately losing your geo place. You may as well ring your uni and discuss it with them - you're not committing yourself to changing and you can't lose your geo place just by expressing an interest in another course, but they could give you a more accurate answer on how likely course transfer would be.
