Music that isn't the top 20!
Hey guys, soo I have very limited taste in music that i pretty much only listen to music that is on radio (capital fm usually), and am pretty bored with my ipod atm!

I do have some other songs apart from the usual pop/rnb (e.g.fleet foxes, the black keys) but only because my mates have told me to listen to them!

Soo does anybody want to recommend other songs that you wouldnt hear on the radio? My ipod needs some variety

    thanks in advance

Have you tried making a last.fm account and seeing what recommendations come up and going from there?

One artist I really like at the moment is Emilie Autumn. Her new album was released yesterday and it's really theatrical and a bit industrial.

Listen to the Civil Wars or Charlie Simpson (might recognise him from good old Busted). However, 'Ships in the Night' and 'Hey Mama' by Mat Kearney are my favourite tracks at the moment.

You definitely need to just go on YouTube and gradually get deeper in to the realms of YouTube Narnia - it's such a wonderful place with the best undiscovered music.

I was listening to a band called 'Isbells' the other day, click on one of their songs and then the suggested videos sidebar off that video should prove pretty fruitful

Theres loads of indie/ rock music out that is really popular, new and old- loads of teenagers still listen to Nirvana and The Smiths for example, including myself and my friends.
For something more current you could try MGMT, Ben Howard, Two Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines etc. Although you of couse may not like this genre, in that case my suggestions are pretty irrelevant

If you like modern R&B and Hip-Hop you could listen to Frank Ocean and Azelia Banks, although I assume you know who they are anyway and my knowledge of this genre isn't that extensive

Modern mainstream music at the moment is terrible, depressing beyond belief!! go back to the 80's, its the only way!

What's with this pseudo-knowledgeable trend of people claiming that the 80s is the "only way" and "amazing"? There are plenty of songs which are excellent in this day and age, and genres which never existed in those times.

I love a bit of Two Door Cinema Club and The Kooks.

Wu-Tang Clan are quality if you're into old school hip hop. (36 Chambers is the album you want) - C.R.E.A.M get the money, dollar dollar bill y'all.

Love a bit of Cris Cab as well. Chilled as ****.

And i did point those genres out? I'm not saying all modern music is terrible, just that I don't like a lot of the horrible mainstream music about sex and clubbing and drugs, with popstars running around half naked in their videos- what happened to having a bit of self respect!?

I never implied that you did.

If this is what people want to do, and as long as it is legal, let them do it. I agree that it is terrible.

GREAT band, though I can't see someone coming from a pop background appreciating them, hah.

Reel big Fish - Ska / Punk, happy as you go
Dan Le sac vs Scroobius Pip - UK Hip hop / spoken word awesomeness
Infected Mushroom - A smorgasbord of genres mixed with techno - real variety here and rarely disappoints
