no idea what to do at University
I literally have no idea what i want to do at university and i'm applying this year. I do Chemistry Maths Biology and German at AS and i don't want to do a subject involving biology i.e medicine. I would like to do something involving maths and chemistry.
Does a degree in chem eng involve a lot a of designing (something which i'm not very good at) and i've heard that chemistry graduates aren't very successful when it comes to applying for jobs post uni.
Any ideas? Or any ideas on what other courses i could look into would be a great help. -

Chemistry graduates are meant to be very successful as they're very in demand. -
You could become a pharmacist! That involves mainly chemistry and maths! You could drop bio at AS and only complete maths Chemistry and german... I felt clueless as well but then I did some work experience at my dentist and found it a possibly university level study option! So maybe find some work experience in what you may be interested in! And look through different university prospectuses to see the different courses. Hope it helps Lool

Re: no idea what to do at UniversityI know, I merely put a link which would explain what Chem Eng is as they didn't seem to know.(Original post by Tullia)
OP doesn't find the idea of design appealing, and so Chemical Engineering isn't so much an option.
I know OP has said as much but this thread made them realise it I think. Thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...0#post38695350
Edit: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...267&highlight= This sums it up better. -
Re: no idea what to do at UniversityI'm studying pharmacy and al your chemistry is near enough done by 2nd year. Theres ALOT more biology involved. Well atleast in my uni. Also the maths seems easy compared to what I done in school.(Original post by acer0951)

Re: no idea what to do at University
You really don't seem keen on any of the subjects you mentioned, so why not look at completely different subjects? You have wide ranging skills, you have the skills that studying a language gives you and the contrast from Chemistry, the combination makes you an appealing candidate.

At the moment you are correct. Pharmacy has been increasing recently because vocational courses are becoming more in demand due to the economic climate. Other vocational courses are becoming saturated for jobs to the point where its crazy numbers applying for each position primary teaching for example.
More and more pharmacy schools have opened up and its starting to become a bit of a concern for the governing body. They are thinking about introducing a cap to protect our demand. Im going into third year so that will suit me nicely. Most likely all talk no action though.
As for jobs right now though. Although tough... most students will find a job in pharmacy within a few months and 99.9% by a year of searching. My uni has 100% employment for us and has had every year since it started the course.
The pay varies. If you go into Hospital, the rarer side of pharmacy. The pay is a lot lower but job satisfaction seems to be sky high. Lets say 28k after 3 odd years qualified. Compare that with community pharmacy. As in the kind most know pharmacist as. In a shop. It would not be rare for a student to walk into a 35k-40k job. Although in a shop the pay will peak. In a hospital you are only limited in pay by your own performance and positions available. I'm think a consultant pharmacist can earn 100 odd k a year. Although these positions are very very rare. -
What university are you at? Do you think i've left it a little to late to do pharmacy?(Original post by 1tartanarmy)

Re: no idea what to do at UniversityI'm at RGU in Aberdeen. Erm for this year then like most courses yes. Maybe clearing but I'm not sure if there would even be places spare. Theres always next year though failing that... or sometimes if you contacted the uni's pharmacy department directly you never know.(Original post by poopnoddy)
