MSc Economics in St Andrews or MPhil Economics in Cambridge
Hi! I'm a student in UEA, doing BSc Economics. I'll be in third year this september. I'm in the middle of choosing a university for my master's degree in Economics. I averaged first in both my first and second year and have done quite a few mathematical modules, so I think I should be able to do a master's degree in Economics. Please leave a comment on what you think about St Andrews and Cambridge and any other suggested universities are welcome. Thanks in advance. Hope you're having a nice summer.

PS. I don't really like London, it's too crowded, so it's unlikely that I apply to any uni in London.

Is the MSc at St Andrews part of the SGPE, or is it a stand-alone programme?

Either way, though, I'd probably opt for Cambridge. A generally stronger (more mathematical) course, and more optional modules available.

But visit each and see which you prefer in terms of location, atmosphere, and general student body, as both will be very different. Paulwhy, who used to frequent this forum and did his MSc and PhD at Warwick had a friend who attended Cambridge, and his friend commented on how very different the Cambridge atmosphere was and how it almost made you feel very secluded from the rest of the world. (But that's anecdotal of course.)

I have read part of the last year's handbook of the St. Andrews programme (I assume you are refering to the Msc ISE) and, to be honest, it does not look very rigorous.

Stiglitz, Hartford and Kay as previous readings? those books are more anecdotal than academic, and some of the modules have a very unclear purpose.

I would go to Cambridge in a heartbeat.

Ah, or actually, are you talking about: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/economic...g1.html?s=econ

I didn't quite realise St Andrews were planning a new MSc Economics to break away from the SGPE. Interesting news! Anyhow, after reading that, I'd still opt for Cambridge. The course at Cambridge is better from the looks of things, and more importantly, is well established so will be void of any hiccups that new courses often suffer from.

Hey guys! Thanks for your comments. I'm referring to the link in .ACS.'s last comment. I agree with all of you, I think the modules in MSc Economics in St Andrews are not as good as the ones in Cambridge. So I will apply for Cambridge, but I think it's hard to get a place in Cambridge, so do you have any other suggestions on which other universities are good at Economics? I just want to widen my choices.

Well, the top five economics schools in Britain are (in no particular order): Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL and Warwick.

So obviously, if you think you are capable, apply to those five. Apart from that, the next bunch is much of the sameness (Bristol, Nottingham, Southampton, Bath, Exeter, York, etc.).

If you want a backup go with Edinburgh, SGPE, not St Andrews.

You have to be a real star to get into Oxbridge or LSE. Edinburgh is a lot more realistic, while still a good Econ school.
St Andrews is nothing, it is not even on the "map" (in terms of Econ)

Top 10 where, in Britain? Maybe.
In the World rankings they are not even top 100:
