IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?
Hi, i am currently studying the IB, and am wanting to pursuit law in university.
I was wondering what ib scores would you need to be predicted to be likely to get offers from UCL/LSE/KCL and any other top universities. On the university prospectuses, it states around 38-39/45 for law would suffice. However, this is really not the case.
My friend who was predicted 44 and got into LSE law said to me i would atleast need 42 or 41 predicted MINIMUM in order to have a good chance within these top universities for law. Why is the score stated in the university prospectus so much lower than the actual standard offer?
Currently, i am looking at around 40 to 41 for my predictions. Would this be an alright score to apply for law in these universities? assuming that my personal statement is strong.
I had also achieved 6 A*, 2B and 1A for my iGCSE's. Econ and history A*
Please share your experiences, preferred if you did the IB, for any particular courses in which you applied for these universities.Last edited by fatits; 26-07-2012 at 05:36. -

I got predicted grade of 41 out of 42 and got conditional offer from lse and ucl -

After the minimum requirements your Personal Statement is probably THE determining factor. If you have a 45 IB student vs a 38 student yet the 38 shows passion/commitment/outside reading etc in PS, the 38 will get taken over the 45 if the 45 doesnt demonstrate those things.

Once you get into the 40s, everyone is pretty much on an equal playing field I would say. However, if you have strong GCSEs, and are predicted 42, and someone else has weak GCSEs, and is predicted a 44, you would show more credibility I would say. The personal statement is also very important when it comes to these very competitive courses where everyone has very similar and high grades.

A 45-er is never turned down in favor for a 38. It's not like someone with a predicted of 45 will have a bad personal statement anyway. Personal statements can maybe decide the difference between two people who are predicted 37 and 39, or even 39 and 42, but no one in their right minds turns down a 45 unless they really hate the PS or the person's attitude.

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?
That's not really true. There are literally huge numbers of people that get inflated predictions of 45s and never meet them. I'd be interested in seeing a statistic of candidates that are predicted 45 vs. the 0.2% of all candidates who achieve the grade.

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?There are huger numbers of people who get inflated predicteds of 38's, so the ratio is still comparable.(Original post by Flip1)

For KCL: Offer= 38 with 666 HL and they might give a condition of 5 in SL english if you are intl and have SL english.
In my experience, KCL are big on grades and reflection on what you have learned so as long as you have a good predicted, realistic idea of the profession, why you want to do it and all, there is a good chance you will make it. All the best.

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?yes(Original post by fatits)
so, does anyone think i will have a high chance of receiving an offer by applying to LSE/KCL/UCL law with 40 or 41 (with tok + ee), and a strong personal statement? -
Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?i'm shocked cause cambridge are notorious for being *******s when it comes to IB with conditionals of 45 777 loool like wtf(Original post by XxelliexX)
I got a 38 points with 766 offer from cambridge for philosophy. -
Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?I know two people at KCL who both had predictions around 40, had a 38 offer and ended up getting 35 and getting in. It might be a bit stricter with Law though(Original post by fatits)

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?definitely wont turn a 45 down for a 38.. maybe if it was a 45 vs 44(Original post by Jonty007)

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?You can't say that they 'definitely' won't... they might... predicted grades aren't terribly reliable anyway and universities might not necessarily believe a predicted 45.(Original post by DonBorat)

Re: IB score for top unis in UK like LSE, KCL, UCL?Almost definitely, though. Unless the 45's PS is REALLY bad (I mean extremely pompous or completely devoid of enthusiasm/ knowledge of the subject) universities never turn down someone who's predicted 45 for someone who's predicted 38. Predicted grades are inflated, yes, but that statement also applies to predicteds of 38. More so for them, because there are more people in the 35-40 range than the 41-45 range.(Original post by XxelliexX)

If universities don't believe a predicted of 45, what do they believe?! Usually a grade like that is backed up with a string of A* IGCSEs so it's pretty believable. -
Exactly! What are they to believe? Universities aren't lovers of the predicted grade system precisely because they do not know what to believe! I got exactly what I was predicted, but I know most schools inflate their predictions by quite a bit....This is the very reason why the system is rather flawed
