stuck on what to choose for Uni!
Hiya,
I am in a similar position to many of the students going in to their second year of A Levels.
I am unsure of what to study at University. I do not have many interests except from Traveling, I love to travel and explore tropical places, and I also love the sea. It have been a goal of mine for a while to get my padi diving certificate, and sail in a boat to random islands for fun
.
When I was younger I was always interested in becoming a zoologist but Boiolgy and sciences are becoming way too hard for me, and it just isnt going to work out. I have looked up Marine conservation, but all of those type of subjects require staying on to do Biology for A2 but I was planning on dropping it after AS. My current subjects are Biology, Psychology, Art and English.
Which kind of brings me on to my next predicament, I am good at Art, so also was interested in maybe Fashion design as I sometimes make clothes and I have a book of dress designs etc. But Fashion is a very competitive industry. other choices were, Advertisement, set-design for example, on stage of for movies. I also extended my 'passion for fashion' (excuse that)
into Stage costumes, for theatre productions, as when I go to see plays I am always intrigued by the costume.
As i previously stated, I have not real hobbie, and it is getting so late not I really should know what I want to study by the end of Summer.
I guess I really need a degree that is guaranteed a job by the end of it.
I am open to all suggestions.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!
Sorry to sound desperate and annoying xx -

Re: stuck on what to choose for Uni!I'd suggest trying to keep on Biology, unless you really really feel you can't do it even with extra work and effort. I say this because its not always a good idea to give up on a childhood dream just because it gets a little hard.
Keep in mind that you don't have to go to university, you could work for a volunteering abroad company (e.g. VESA) or travel around.
No degree is guarenteed a job by the end of it, especially now as the job market is awful, but you will have a much better time finding one with a sciencey degree, or a vocational degree (e.g. NHS courses). -
Re: stuck on what to choose for Uni!
Have you considered not going to uni? There are a lot of options available. I know someone who originally planned to do a gap year, they went to do some conservation work in South America, and was offered full time work there, I think she had a D in A-level biology. It might sound harsh, but I think you have to think seriously as to whether spending £9000 a year for 3 years is worth it if you don't really know which subject to even do. Just putting the idea out there, that is all.

Re: stuck on what to choose for Uni!
Lukas makes a good point. It sounds as if an expensive degree you aren't sure about might not be the best way to go.
There are numerous volunteer conservation projects all over the globe, and you'll be doing really important work.
I realise there's big pressure these days to get a degree just because everybody else is. However for a lot of people it's probably not the best route, which is probably why there're so many people doing degrees they don't enjoy and feeling lost at the end of them! -
Re: stuck on what to choose for Uni!I have considered staying with Biology, but last year I wasnt doing very well, and next year becomes more mathematical, and I know it is all a stepping stone to get to where you want, but I am not interested in mathematical biology, mainly just the marine and animal side of it.(Original post by Shelly_x)

I will continue looking at Gap Year companies abroad as I have done in the past.
Thank you for your help.

that makes me feel better! I don't even think my teachers are comfortable with me carrying on Biology.
Would any of you recommend after my final year of A-Level, doing a conservation period abroad during that summer before Uni, and seeing how that goes, but still having applied via UCAS to universities for a foundation art degree or something...? -
Re: stuck on what to choose for Uni!I have considered a Gap Year, but my mum wasn't/isn't too keen on the idea, as she feels it is a cop out for me! She thinks I am just trying to get out of school as fast as possible!(Original post by zenb)
