    Help! Scam or job interview?
Hi everyone, well basically I don't know if this is real or not.

2 days ago I applied online for a temporary part time job at Sainsbury's and today I've received a text saying they are offering me a telephone interview. I have to phone them and quote a reference number, and it says it can take up to 20 mins. Is it normal for them to make you pay for a 20 minute call? Or is it one of those scams to get money out of you? Has anyone received this from Sainsbury's or knows if it's legit?
I don't know if Im being overcautious but I do get a lot of those scams!

    Cheers for any help

Yes, it's just a Manchester number (I'm in Lancaster). Nothing strange came up, no threads about scams or anything, so I don't know

I've never had an interview like that before but I highly doubt a company as successful as Sainsburys is out to scam you our of your phone credit, especially as you'd be paying the phone company, not Sainsburys. Is it a landline number? If so I'd rest easy, those calls are free anyway with my phone package!

The last time I checked if a company expects you to pay them for you to work for them it sounds iffy, unless they are paying your money back.

Haha, I don't think it's Sainsbury's that's trying to scam me! Just someone pretending to be them. It is a landline, but it's not free on my phone package...

I think I might just phone and see if it sounds dodgy, hopefully not!

    Thanks anyway both of you

To be honest, it would make more sense for them to phone you as it's them who are interviewing. Best thing to do is, as you say, just phone the number. If it is a scam I'm sure you'll know pretty soon, in which case hang up! Give them less of a chance to get money out of you.

If it is a scam, it must be a fairly speculative one. It would only work on people who had recently applied for jobs at Sainsbury.

No it's not a scam, that's how sainbury's contact you once you been successful of the online assessment. It's so that you aware that you are going to have an telephone interview and so that they know that you are still interested in the job. To be honest I just think it's them being too lazy to call up everyone. But yeah, I had a sainbury's interview and I had to call the same number, trust me it is no scam. Once you complete the telephone interview you basically got the job, and all you have to do is come in for an assessment day, to confirm you was the person that they spoke to on the phone.

P.S. prepare yourself for a full on interview when you call them. they are going to ask you about 10 questions regarding your availability, work experience, competence and they are going to ask you of examples of customer faced roles you have played.

It's not a scam, I too have a sainsburys interview (on friday actually!) and I had to phone up and arrange my interview. It didn't last anywhere near 20 minutes though! It was more like 10 You just say you're booking an interview and give your reference number, and then they ask you a few questions such as how old you are, whether it was you who completed the online application, check you're available on the dates you said you were, etc and then they give you your interview date. There isn't really anything you need to prepare for, it's all very yes/no etc

I don't think it's legit. When you submit an application , it is the employer that calls you and does an interview, not the applicant calling them for them to conduct one. I find it very suspicious. If I were you, I'd ask around and check with friends for another job opportunity.

Why don't you run a phone number look-up at http://www.callercenter.com? It's actually a consumer complaint website where most people report phone scams and suspicious phone calls. If you do not find any information about the number, you can post a question about the owner instead. With about 40 000 visitors on the site daily, it's highly possible that somebody know about the owner.
