I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
I hate modern Hollywood mainstream cinema, all bunch of repetitive crap "Adam Sandlar is a toaster" no creativity goes into these films. I hate going into mutli-plexs surrounded by dumb people, it annoys me that they think these films are good.
So I much prefer European and Asian films where its more about the film rather than the money making. Bringing something new.
People still today won't watch a film if its not in English which is kind of sad because you're missing out, I think its ignorant not to appreciate other cultures.
What are your opinions on this? -
Re: I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
Well to be honest the majority of films coming out of hollywood are what most people want to watch: something entertaining. Sure, most of Adam Sandler's films are absolute ****e, though some are quite good; you can't base all of hollywood's films on such god-awful cinematography. The fact is that bollywood films are formulaic, most hollywood films are also, just like most films ever made anywhere on earth. To paraphrase Danny DeVito, "Hollywood is now a lot more about money" simply because so much is made from films nowadays. It's a business like any other, unfortunately. That said, some of the best films ever made come out of hollywood, so just watch good films no matter where they're from; that's my view.
As for your point about hating people that like such films: don't be such a snob. Of course not everybody has the same film tastes, though hating somebody for it is absolutely pathetic, childish, and just plain simply snobbery. On the contrary, I think that people who see themselves as movie "connoisseurs" are the complete idiots, or at least people desperate for people to see how "smart" they are. Grow up and just enjoy films, and don't criticise others for what they enjoy and like. As a wise man once said "you can't dispute one's tastes"Last edited by mevidek; 26-07-2012 at 16:20. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream Hollywoodhaha Bollywood is bad example.(Original post by Clip)
99% of the films coming out of Asia are even more formulaic and even more rubbish. Bollywood have been selling people the same 3 films for generations.
I was referring more to Japan, France, South Korea etc
It just annoys me that people will only watch films like Transformers, getting all attention when they clearly poorly made films. I don't want see films like that. Cinemas are too focused on Hollywood culture where its too much about the stars when its suppose to be a form of art which I feel others countries get right. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodI'm not trying to be a snob, Hollywood can do good if they tried. I know some good comes Hollywood but the last few years its been the same, another superhero film, unfunny comedy, another sequel. I like originality in films, the last Hollywood film I liked was Prometheus because it wasn't a copy of anything else.(Original post by mevidek)

Hollywood to me don't have balls nowadays so I get bored, other countries seem bring something new. I'm not trying to target the American people, there is a lot of independent movies from there that don't get the attention they need because of big companies taking over. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodNever watched it, I might enjoy it but I don't know, not a film that grabs my attention, I'm sure its good.(Original post by NapoleonDynamite)
What's your opinion on The Godfather?
I tend to watch more drama, horror, sci-fis, I do need to watch more crime films. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodThe Godfather is drama. You wont be dissapointed with it and it's not a typical Hollywood crap(Original post by farrow000)

Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodDark Knight Rises was pretty fantastic, and was made in Hollywood (though the director is English), what's wrong with that? I disagree completely with what you say; most films that are good become famous and get the attention they deserve. Sure you have smaller companies with less publicity, but the fact remains it's got nothing to do with company size; it's all about the intentions of the director, producer, and cast. A fantastic film always does well... Unfortunately quite a few bad ones do as well. And on your note about not "trying to be a snob", you may not be "trying", but you are being a snob by looking down on others for their tastes.(Original post by farrow000)

Try watching the following if you haven't:
Godfather 1 & 2 (not that into the Godfather, but still great films)
The Usual Suspects
American Beauty (English director but all cast American and all made in Hollywood)
The Goodfellas
Evil Dead II (hilarious example of how a great small-time movie becomes a hit and later a classic)
American Pie 1 & 2
Caddyshack
The Departed
Night of the Living Dead (original)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Day of the Dead
Se7en
Fight Club
The Shining
Misery
Inception
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises
Blues Brothers
National Lampoon's Animal HouseLast edited by mevidek; 26-07-2012 at 19:58. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodYou weren't asking me but I'll answer anyway.(Original post by NapoleonDynamite)
What's your opinion on The Godfather?
I found the film to be extremely boring. I honestly felt as thought I'd wasted a good 3 hours. I stopped watching 30 minutes before the film ended. I tried but I couldn't discover its 'cinematic genius'. I felt as though I was obliged to love it because everyone else seems to.
Not my sort of film.Last edited by T-Toe; 26-07-2012 at 20:12. -

I started watching it at 1am and wouldn't stop until 4am and I'd finished it. For me it was a masterpiece and well deserved of the credit it gained -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodI don't know what's wrong with me but some of these films did not live up to expectations, at all. I suppose that's due to the fact that I had over-ambitious hope for them. The best scene for me in American Beauty was Kevin Spacy masturbating in the shower. That's sorta saying something isn't it?(Original post by mevidek)

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight made me yearn for my bed. I haven't seen The Dark Knight Rises and I hope to god I like it. There's been so much critical and media hype.
I haven't seen all the non-animated movie greats but so far, Pulp Fiction is one of my favourites.Last edited by T-Toe; 26-07-2012 at 20:28. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodI don't have any opinions on it. If you don't like a film, then fair enough - feel free to criticize the film all you want, but you can't criticize the people who like films that don't meet your standards.(Original post by farrow000)

I am annoyed by people who act oh-so-Superior because they don't like mainstream cinema. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodGood films, some not to my taste but still respectable. I wouldn't recommend American Pie to anyone, just another american teen comedy. Cheap humour(Original post by mevidek)

Okay maybe I am a snob but I can't defend terrible film making, a good film are made by people with heart and interested in film.
Micheal Bay is the obvious example with Transformers, could of been great but he over does with the special effects and weak storyline plus the terrible horror remakes he has made.
I agree Dark Knight is good, I don't have a interest for action superhero type films but I respect people like it and I can see its well made because the director (forgot his name) knows what he is doing.
but saying that it does get boring the same kind of films get most of the attention mainly superhero but the lowest you go is stuff like Twilight that all it is a bunch of good looking jumping around. The standard has slipped since the early days of Hollywood, not everyone wants to see kiddy movies, I don't. I prefer mature films but are creative and unique, isn't that the art of film. Its all about pop culture nowadays, just tired of it hence why I turn to French and Japanese films because they just get on with it.
Anyway I better stop before someone calls me a snob, I recommend you see a film called "God Bless America" I basically share the same opinion as the man in the film. I can admit that i'm a snob yes but I'm not defending crap. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
The best Hollywood movies came out in the 90's, imo. Really good movies like The Untouchables and The Pianist.
Am I the only person who really likes Adam Sandler movies?(Original post by Kiss)
I don´t particuarly like Adam Sandler either but he doesn´t epitomise all of hollywood.
(except Jack and Jill, that was ****!)
