I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodNot too impressed with Japanese cinema these days. They make so many over the top films and not enough more subtle films like Tokyo Sonata, Departures, films by Koreeda Hirokazu, etc..I like the over the top stuff aswell, but it seems like that's all they ever do nowadays.(Original post by farrow000)
haha Bollywood is bad example.
I was referring more to Japan, France, South Korea etc
It just annoys me that people will only watch films like Transformers, getting all attention when they clearly poorly made films. I don't want see films like that. Cinemas are too focused on Hollywood culture where its too much about the stars when its suppose to be a form of art which I feel others countries get right.
Love South Korean films, although they do also have their fair share of terrible films. Hollywood has loads of crappy action films, Korea has loads of terrible romance films(and lots of good ones too)
You should check out some Hong Kong and Taiwanese films aswell if you haven't already. Dumplings, Big Blue Lake are a few examples. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodI do like Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, House etc crazy films but use its something different to see.(Original post by Jedders)

I also recommend to check Takashi Miike's films like Audition, Gozu, Ichi the killer, Happiness of the katakuris and others, they're weird but not silly.
I like most Korean films too, Old boy, Host, Chaser, Into the Mirror. Most Korean films tend to have supernatural elements to them but they are well thought out.
I think The eye was Taiwainese, there is a film called Uncle Boonme which I've been meaning to check out.
Couple of those you mentioned I need to check out , thanks
so people know I don't judge film from what country its from, just Hollywood to me is too much about celebrity culture where as in Asia its just about the films. Don't care what language its in. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodUgh, I wish. Trust me, the celeb culture in South Korea is far worse. The only difference is that they don't export their crap as widely as we do.so people know I don't judge film from what country its from, just Hollywood to me is too much about celebrity culture where as in Asia its just about the films. Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodLOL! ahh you're funny. Pianist was out in 2002 and Untouchables was 1987, but agreed they are quite good films.(Original post by Nephilim)
The best Hollywood movies came out in the 90's, imo. Really good movies like The Untouchables and The Pianist.
Am I the only person who really likes Adam Sandler movies?
(except Jack and Jill, that was ****!)

Re: I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
Yeah. I much prefer older films, or at least British/European ones, to Hollywood films.
However, if you're looking for spectacle then Hollywood is obviously the place to go (Like the recent Dark Knight and Spiderman films, for example, are from Hollywood - but I wouldn't say they're bad, I quite enjoyed the thrill). There are still plenty of good American films (The Evil Dead, The Shining, and films by Romero and Kubrick)
I'm sure you're aware of a lot of iconic British films (Trainspotting, Shaun of the Dead, etc), classics (A Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest), and the European films (Dogtooth, Let the Right One In - which is STUNNING if you actually haven't seen it...). With all these films from across time and other countries, we don't really need Hollywood. I don't actually know much about Asain films, if you'd like to enlighten me to some good ones?
But there are some other gems you may not know of. Check out films by Lynne Ramsay for something REALLY different to Hollywood films. Or if you're looking for something a little more independent, how about This is not a Love Song?
I honestly think more people would share your opinion of Hollywood films if they actually KNEW about what other films are out there. Currently, most Cinemas only show the big Hollywood films. A lot of British and European films never make it to our screens. Which is sad, really. If people were aware that there was different film out there, then it might actually become popular enough to be shown in conventional cinemas. -
Re: I Hate Mainstream HollywoodWait, Adam Sandler's going to play a toaster? I must see this movie.(Original post by farrow000)
I hate modern Hollywood mainstream cinema, all bunch of repetitive crap "Adam Sandlar is a toaster" -

Re: I Hate Mainstream Hollywood
How many people here have actually ventured outside mainstream cinema before criticising the opinion in the original post?
If the answer is no, then by insulting that opinion you are pretty much just as narrow-minded as the original poster himself.Last edited by Femto; 30-07-2012 at 00:08.
