Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?Which laptop was that. I heard that they had good reliabilty(Original post by harrietx123x)
The reviews only review them in the short term - thats why i went for a lenovo because you get so much for your money. They work well but not for very long unfortunately. If you want a laptop that will last then i wouldn't suggest a lenovo. Also, it's not just mine that stopped working. My best friend had one which did almost exactly the same as mine - gave up after a short time!

Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 - mine had 4gb ram but worked desperately slowly after about 16 months of use. -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?I am not that good with the hardware on laptops and have some questions?(Original post by Iqbal007)
Just open up the outlined bit on the back, and just clear out the dust to be honest.
And take off the heatsink and buy a good thermal paste and replace and stick everything back together, temps improve and so does performance.
Do I clean it with a cotton bud or a wet cloth?
What is the heat sink and how do you remove it?
Also how do I make sure that I don't get an electric shock from the battery/wires?
Thanks -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?~16 months. The battery life also deteriorated to half an hour at a push after ~2 years - I tried to not keep it plugged in all the time but it still decreased.(Original post by ...mo...)
How long? -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands? What processor did you have.(Original post by harrietx123x)
Only for a short amount of time (even with firewalls ect)
Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 - mine had 4gb ram but worked desperately slowly after about 16 months of use.
Would it be worth buying the laptop with a warranty/guarantee and then ask for a replacement in 16 months? -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?I'll be buying a new laptop in fairly soon and I'm only going on reviews and friends' experiences with them. I'm watching this thread and similar ones because I really have no idea. Lenovo seems to rate highly in "most reliable" articles, such as this one. From the specs available and price ranges I've seen, I'm leaning toward Asus or Toshiba, or I might spend a little more and go for a Sony or Samsung(Original post by ...mo...)
I've heard good reviews on Lenovo but am not too sure. What do you think? -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?
I've been a user of laptops since 95, been around quite a lot of laptops as well.
Generally if you go to any commercial settings and see what laptops they use, it tends to be either Lenovo, HP and Fujitsu where they need reliability over style, in fact a lot of the commercial grade laptops tend to look absolutely flat, plain and boring but they do perform very well for extended periods of time.
A Lenovo ThinkPad is one of the more reliable ones that is also sold as a consumer grade laptop, the downside to it is many of them are rather heavy.
As for student usage, presumably it needing to be bought on a budget, then Asus is an excellent choice though you must buy one that is fit for the purpose rather than plainly on price. If you can afford it, a Macbook a very good choice. -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?Sorry only just noticed the last part. I used it for mainly school work and internet surfing. Bought all my music legally so no dodgy downloads. Have no idea why it stopped but I just began getting gradually slower and slower, with frequent error messages appearing constantly. Microsoft word began to get slower and eventually stopped working completely. I was very disappointed with its performance in the end.(Original post by ...mo...)

What processor did you have.
Would it be worth buying the laptop with a warranty/guarantee and then ask for a replacement in 16 months?
And yes, going back in time I would have got a longer guarantee/care plan! -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?
Do laptops come installed with word/power point/excel or do you always have to buy it for the laptop. Anyone know where to get a cheap version of Microsoft office home and student, such as this

Heatsink is usually screwed down on top of the cpu and gpu, it's a large metallic thing to dissipate the heat produced, looks like this but varies laptop to laptop.
You should be fine as long you disconnected everything from the battery, mains, etc, but if your unsure make sure your grounded by touching something metal. -
Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?
Definatley not apple, they look good and are incredibly fast but break so easily and frequently (3 macs in 2 years with roughly 6 repairs on each) luckily the remaining 2 macbooks were free replacements as they kept breaking through no fault of my own. The hard drives are dodgy and the screens break. I've had a sony vaio for over 18 months now and had no problems with it at all. There are also many cheaper makes out there which seem to be pretty good, lenovo and acer seem to be good

Re: What are the best overall laptop brands?
Id have to say Lenovo, their bog standard range is quite good but the Thinkpads are top of the line ... cost a pretty penny but well worth it. Built to last, my last one was working fine for about 5 years before i upgraded [although technically it was IBM not Lenovo
] Theyre built for business use but will easily outstrip most other laptops of a similar price
Although i've also heard good stories about Dells Alienware laptops ... although they do cost a fortune :L -

Re: What are the best overall laptop brands? Thanks(Original post by DaveDavids)
you should have a hardware spec in mind as well as an idea of what kind of things you wish to do / software you intend to run?
bang for buck (so to speak) you will get a far better hardware spec PC running Windows than Apple laptop.
