Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?If this is your only job, you shouldn't pay. You may need to fill in a P46 (if you don't have a P45 to hand in) to avoid being taxed when you shouldn't be.(Original post by Charlottie93)
I hope they don't tax me, I know my sister was having a look at one and it was £240 a week ( I wouldn't be bothered about paying tax if I was on that) but mine is only £120 so I shouldn't pay either hopefully

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?Fingers crossed... Probably won't be much. No more than a tenner I would think, still too much but oh well. Whathagonado!!(Original post by Charlottie93)

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?

OK, good luck to you. Sounds like you have a good planI do think I'll stay on it. I'm qualified in Social care.. (BTEC). So, I'll try & find some weekend care work.. Or some weekend cleaning work
I'll graft if I have to.
My problem is I'm forever hard on myself because i feel like i should be bringing more to the table.
But this time next year I'll have an NVQ in teaching support.. So hopefully that'll open the doors to some nursery nursing or TA work.
Thanks!

My mum was saying she was earning more than that a week and only getting charged £3 tax or something silly like that.

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?dyu know anything about this grant people are talking about?
I've tried to find some info on it & to my understanding there's a £1'500 grant for the employ when they take on an apprentice.
Some though are saying its for the apprentice. Confused.
Imagine getting that kinda grant... -
Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips? The employers get a grant but I've never heard anything about the apprentices getting a grant.(Original post by HoldThatThought)

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips? It's perfectly manageable as long as you enjoy your work. I work 9-4 Monday till Friday for around £96.20 a week. I'm contracted for two years though, and since I'm 19 I'll be entitled to NMW next year (so it's not all that bad). I work in Business, so the qualifications are well worth it. I was looking on the Job Centre website for Business Jobs after the apprenticeship (just to see the money and stuff), and you can go a long way if you get the NVQ level three (which is what I'll be doing), and you can obviously go to University as well.(Original post by HoldThatThought)
I'm due to begin an apprenticeship in 'Teaching Support' which is basically for teaching assisting.
I'll be getting around £100 per week which is an improvement to JSA but still a dismal amount. If you've been on an apprenticeship how'd you survive?
I'm hoping to get part time work as my goal would be to get a car etc. I understand that people should live within their means; meaning if I can barely afford a car & its ridiculous amount of insurance I shouldn't get one BUT I want one. END OF STORY.
Plus, I'm getting sick of the amount of jobs I can't get due to not driving/not holding a licence as in social care its often needed.
Also, believe it or not it would be nice to help the mother with her weekly shop.
Is it do-able to juggle part time work, my job placement & my 1 day a week in college studying?
I'll work hard, I don't need a social life..
Also, has anyone left their apprenticeship due to being offered a job with better pay?
I AM NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE WHEN IT COMES TO APPRENTICESHIPS .. YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS WELCOME.
I'm seeking further advice about living whilst doing an apprenticeship.. But for now your advice will do
As for the weekend jobs, I'm currently trying to look for one as well for some extra cash. You can still have a social life, as long as it's not bar work I suppose.
It's all perfectly do able though.
EDIT: I'll also be getting the job afterwards, so it's well worth it. Think of the big picture, you can progress after achieving NVQ's and Technical Certificates rather than just being stuck in a dead end job. University can be an option.

You seem to have everything sorted.
I'm aiming to find social care work in the weekend or I found work as a nanny.
You're right, its manageable.. Thanks.
Good luck with the business.. What sorta things in particular do you do? -
Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?I'm the Managers Assistant/Administration Assistant, so I deal with any work he has. Any Microsoft software (Word, Excel), making Spreadsheets, dealing with e-mails and any other tasks as and when required. Sometimes use the phone.(Original post by HoldThatThought)

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?
I've got one week left of my Apprenticeship and then I'll be on a proper salary so I know exactly what it's like living on such a low wage! My advice would be to make sure you fill out the P46 straight away because you shouldn't be paying tax on that wage and also to fill out the "Employee incentive form" which your employer should be able to help you with. This will allow you to claim up to £1000 from the Government and can be used for travel expenses etc.
Don't be put off by the low wages, I stuck out my IT Apprenticeship with Atos Origin and now I'll be rewarded with a competitive salary, a private health care package and an excellent pension plan. Is all worth it in the end!
Good luck! -
Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?Is this like a non-repayable grant? What do you do? Where can I get this form?(Original post by The Jacobite)

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?
If you are paying alot for travel, ask the company to pay for the expenses. Apprenticeships generally start at the most minimum wage possible, after all I think the minimum is around 90-100 £ a week. Just stick it out, at the end of your apprenticeship your more than likely to be hired. Having an apprenticeship; count yourself lucky! I've been looking for almost a year and no luck.

Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?I understand they're busy.. But I'm becoming anxious and want to call them even after I emailed them(Original post by ipoop)
That happened to me as well, I hated that so much, will tell you is this, apply for other apprenticeship, just in case....
.. . So its typical for them to take this long?
Also do you know anything about the flexibility of the apprenticeship?
I know there's a minimum of 30 hrs a week but would I be able to leave early for an evening job.
I'm just a bundle of confusion right now!!! -
Re: Surviving on an Apprenticeship.. any tips?Did you apply through apprenticeship.go.uk? If so, from my experience, it takes ages to even land an interview. I once applied for one which was due to expire in 7 days, it took them a month after to ask to come for an interview. Just be patient I guess, if you call them, they will take it one of two ways, you are keen to find out if you've got the job or not or, you are really annoying and preventing them from doing their job.(Original post by HoldThatThought)

Regarding the hours, that will be up to your employer, best thing to do is have a chat with him, should you land the job, explain the situation, if you are lucky he may offer you more than the the minimum wage. I know I started mine on £120 p/w. That alone covered my travel for the month and my phone bill. I worked 3 and half days a week with one day at college.
My mum was saying she was earning more than that a week and only getting charged £3 tax or something silly like that.
