Am I rough enough? Am I hard enough? for my niece?
I have to take care of my 8 year old niece for the time being my brother and his wife are going on holidays for 2 weeks problem is me and my fiancee have no idea how to take care of a child (hence no children yet) so how am i supposed to tell her when she's gone too far?
I think im a little too soft i tend to give in her wishes and buy her ice-cream etc etc so im afraid that when shes living with us I'll spoil her and she wouldnt want to leave. -
Re: Am I rough enough? Am I hard enough? for my niece?
Yes - be firm but not too strict otherwise it doesn't work. You always need a balance.
If you are in a situation where you don't know what to do, tell your niece of ..shout or whatever...just take a deep breath and smile and talk slowly. If you start shouting and screaming.. its not gonna work.
I have experience from my own many siblings
8 year olds are not as bad as younger kids. Just have something fun for her to do like painting, drawing, watching tv ect and it should keep her occupied
Work and live as a team- you can actually make babysitting fun for you and your niece
Hope you have fun
Good luck

Re: Am I rough enough? Am I hard enough? for my niece?
The title is missleading... anyway its not hard Im only 21 and have a 10month old believe it or not he has tantrum and he knows when hes being told off and when hes being punished... the best thing is to make her learn quickly who's in charge and decide on your punishment types in my case if I want t punish my child (keeping in mind shes only 10months) I take away the toy she is playing with believe me she gets the msg. for an 8 year old send her to her room for 30mins then go up and explain to her what she did wass wrong and get her to say sorry if she does it again increase the time to a hour...

On her first day lay down the rules let her know your boundaries, e.g. bed time is, don't go in the garden etc say your giving a tour
But on the first day you really have to show who is boss or they'll simply take the piss.
Next if she miss behaves whilst she is doing it just talk in a stern voice and if persistent threaten with a call home to their parents that usually makes them jump back into place

Just remember she's 8 years old, not yet fully at the age of reason

Also, 8 year olds are nothing whatsoever like 10 month olds.
Source : I have 3 kids, therefore I'm informed as to what 10 month olds are like. Also my eldest child is now nearly 7 - so relatively close to the age the OP is talking about.
Hope you have fun
