    Seasonal job at Asda
Hi, I've been working at Asda for 4 weeks now and had my first payday today. The thing is, since it's an hourly paid job, I worked out approx how much I should have earned based on hours I've worked minus lunch breaks but I have earned quite a bit less than expected. I am only sixteen and this is my first job and I'm wondering how much I have to pay for national insurance or tax, if I have to (I heard that I don't have to pay tax yet). Any advice on how much national insurance takes off your wage would be great, thanks.

With your hours and pay, you shouldn't be paying income tax or national insurance, as your yearly salary is below the threshold. Maybe Asda cocked up?

Well thanks for telling me this. I think I might just be missing a week's pay due to when I started. I'll wait until next month before I start to worry.
    Thanks

There are two reasons why this may have happened:

    1. You have calculated pay without realising that there is a cut off date for the months pay (i.e. the July pay period began on Sunday 22nd of June and ended on Saturday the 21st of July - I also work for ASDA).

    2. You have been given an emergency tax code - you will need to phone the tax office on your payslip (normally an 0113 number) to rectify this.

The latter especially applies if this is your first paid job.
