DLA to be scrapped and replaced with P.I.P., your thoughts?
At the beginning of this year after many a year of appeals, I was awarded the middle rate care and the middle rate mobility on an indefinite basis. Indefinite to my understanding means for life, I am on it due to having Dyspraxia which is a lifelong condition.
I then hear about the decision made by the government to scrap DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and replace it with a new disability benefit named P.I.P. (Personal Independent Payment)
This will mean that people currently getting DLA will have their payments stopped sometime between late 2013 and 2016, this is for everyone, even those like me who were awarded indefinite awards, apparently , this is because the entitlement criteria is different for P.I.P. than it is to the current DLA.
To be eligible for P.I.P you have to undergo an assessment with a health professional and answer a set of questions regarding care and mobility on everyday life and how it affects you, it is calculated on a scoring chart and you must score above a certain number to be eligible.
Apparently we will be given plenty of notice when the time comes if you wish to apply for P.I.P. if a DLA claimant does that apply for P.I.P. then they will get zero payments.
Whereas Disability living Allowance consists of a Lower, Middle, and Higher rates, the Personal Independent Allowance only consists of a Lower and a Higher.
Personally myself claiming DLA, I am petrified as I'm unsure if on the P.I.P. assessment that I will even be entitled to either one of the two components such as care or mobility, if it will be for indefinite and so on.
As it is now I am getting both component at middle rate on an indefinite basis and I am happy with that but the thought of them changing it makes me very angry.Last edited by U & I; 27-07-2012 at 16:20. -
Re: DLA to be scrapped and replaced with P.I.P., your thoughts?
My husband gets high rate care component of DLA at the moment. I don't know what's going to happen when it switches to P.I.P. but there's not much we can do about it really. I can't see them knocking him off - they only need to take one look at his legs to see that he finds things a struggle!
Still, I don't like change, it makes me edgy. -

He may well still be entitled to P.I.P. but perhaps not at higher rate, maybe not indefinitely either, also if he has a mobility car as a result of being on D.L..A and he gets refused eligibility for P.I.P, or if he gets awarded a lower level, his car will be repossessed. -
Re: DLA to be scrapped and replaced with P.I.P., your thoughts?you can only get motability cars if you get the mobility component of DLA. Like I said, my hubby only gets care component. Our car is owned outright - nothing to do with his DLA.(Original post by U & I)

In theory, I should get the higher rate on both for PIP. I can't see it happening though. I don't agree with the changes. There's nothing about supervision. If some people aren't supervised, this could actually kill them or seriously injure them. This will mean a trip to A&E, which may cost more money than giving them money to pay someone to supervise them.
It's nothing more than a money saving exercise.
