How long before you had your first crash?

Re: How long before you had your first crash? My first crash was when I was about 5. I remember eating a heck of a lot of bon-bons and subsequently became extremely hyperactive. I suppose Biology took its course though, and I hit my sugar crash after about an hour. Since then, I have had about 2,000 crashes(Original post by tobie123)
They save 50% of drivers will crash within a year of passing. I had several crashes in my first year. Who else falls into this statistic, how did it happen and did you learn any lessons?
Going to have to work on that
Ps, although I have not passed yet, I have a friend who has been driving since she was 16 (her dad is an instructor) and passed first time on her 17th birthday. She is 21 in August, and is still yet to have a car accident (touch wood). I think it depends on what you actually do in your car... If you only use it once or twice a week to drive to town for work etc, the probability of crashing and things is likely to be greatly reduced compared to using a car every day at rush hour and what not. Course, if you only use your car for sex, then the only car accident you have to worry about is like, pregnancy.

Re: How long before you had your first crash?
For the year that I drove, nothing.
It really pissed my off though when people post pictures of their crashed cars on facebook and people comment "wow you're mental" or something; makes me sad for the general intelligence of some members of the human race. -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?I was looking to go straight on and the traffic was clear, so I was in 3rd gear and 30mph. My mum panicked because she thought we were lost and told me to do a u-turn just a mere second before I got onto the roundabout. As soon as I realised I wasn't going to make it, I slammed on the brakes but it wasn't enough to avoid hitting the sign on the right of the roundabout.(Original post by davidmarsh01)
Did your mum tell you to do a u-turn around a mini roundabout?
In my defence, I've passed for a year now and haven't really come close to any more accidents. I stall from time to time and struggle in places like Derby and Reading and their one way systems
but that's about it.

Re: How long before you had your first crash? That's made it into the top 5 most stupid things I've read on here I think.(Original post by tobie123)
Having a crash isn't incompetent, it is about getting experience and learning from mistakes. You probably avoided it through luck rather than being a great driver. You can't say that the day you passed your test you were an amazing driver
Good job

Re: How long before you had your first crash?so how long have you been driving without a crash?(Original post by TheJ0ker)

Re: How long before you had your first crash? She shouldn't have told you to do that, you're not supposed to go right round mini-roundabouts(Original post by Dagnabbit)

Re: How long before you had your first crash?I've been driving a couple of months after I passed my test and haven't crashed but my parents have never crashed and I know enough to realise having a crash is mostly down to the incompetence of the driver.(Original post by tobie123)
so how long have you been driving without a crash? -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?I should have known tbh. It's just that, because I hadn't had much experience, and with me respecting my mother's authority too much, it had a sort of inevitability about it.(Original post by davidmarsh01)
She shouldn't have told you to do that, you're not supposed to go right round mini-roundabouts
It wouldn't have been as disastrous if I were in a lower gear, I guess, but as I say, I had less than a second to prepare -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?it's all about gaining experience. you can't really comment if you have only been driving for a couple of months, in that time you have probably only been out in the car on your own a handful of times and driven only a few miles. You don't become a competant driver in that time(Original post by TheJ0ker)

Re: How long before you had your first crash? The whole idea of taking a test is to make sure you are a competent driver before being allowed on to the road on your own. So I think I am a competent driver.(Original post by tobie123)

Re: How long before you had your first crash? If you pass your test and then never drive on your own you are not a competent driver. Passing your test is the start of gaining your driving experience and just says you have the basic skills, or were lucky on the day of the test. Do you drive on a daily basis, have you been on a motorway, have you drive to places you don't know? If not you can't call yourself an experienced driver. So are you saying you weren't at all nervous the first time you went out on your own after your test?(Original post by TheJ0ker)

Re: How long before you had your first crash?
I don't drive, but I have been on the receiving end of plenty of accidents. The majority of these have involved an R-plate driver so who knows, maybe that supports the OP's statistic. Quit mowing down pedestrians!
Although, once I was hit by a nurse with a provisional license. She shouldn't have been on the road but she did clean me up well and was more terrified about the whole experience than me! -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?Yes I was, but being nervous does not mean you suddenly become incompetent. Also what do you mean by the basic skills? You have all the skills you need after passing your test, what skills have you learnt after passing your test?(Original post by tobie123)
