Re: How long before you had your first crash? Was leaving the wedding hall and turning into another street and misjudged the size of the limo on my left side...ended up scraping left side of the car by a lot(Original post by tobie123)
at least if it was a hire car you didn't need to claim on your insurance. What happened?

Re: How long before you had your first crash? The over confident, young male driver. When I worked as an Ambulance Technician I scooped plenty of boys like you up off the road(Original post by RyanT)
I passed with 0 majors and 2 minors. Yes, I was an amazing driver when I passed my test so pipe down child.

Getting experience? Experience at what? Driving a ton of steel into people? How much experience do you need?
Different weather conditions.
Different countries.
Learning to notice the little things that warn of big dangers!
Learning from mistakes!
My old ambulance driving instructor, an ex Traffic Police Officer of some 20 years once said; "Forget what they teach you on your driving test. It's mostly rubbish".(Original post by RyanT)
Many of us can drive without this "experience" and "learning" you seem to value. But then, we learnt to drive during our driving lessons.
My experience in life tells me you are the one more likely to kill someone on the road.(Original post by RyanT)
Sorry son, earlier I felt I was being harsh but it's quite clear you're self-apologetic about your incompetence and that is truly unforgiveable. You're going to end up seriously hurting other people and possibly killing them, perhaps one of your passengers. Pay some attention whilst driving.
I hope your learning from him, I really do(Original post by RyanT)
It's not luck, my dad has been driving for a living for 30 years and also has had zero crashes. Chew on that.

Re: How long before you had your first crash?I'm a road cyclist which makes me extremely aware of speeds. Arrogant is probably the last word that describes my driving style given I slow down more on bends then most people as I know how slow a bike can be going and could easily be on the other side of said bend. I have six years driving experience and no incidents. Several that could of become incidents, however because of the speeds I drive at I'm always able to react in time.(Original post by DalePie)

You've confused me with a boy racer, sorry mate. I get angry seeing them on the road.
What I was taught for my test has kept me safe for thousands of miles of driving in a variety of conditions. Everything from 8 hour motorway journeys, unfamiliar cities, iced over roads and raining at night.
I like the way you focussed on my driving which has a flawless record and said I was more likely to cause an incident then some tool who has crashed several times in his first year and still finds excuses for his poor driving. I consider poor driving unforgivable and would never tolerate it in myself. -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?
Technically, I've never had a crash, although not long after I passed my test someone crashed into my car while it was parked. I wasn't in the car at the time.
While it destroyed the other driver's bumper, causing over £600 of damage to his car, it just left a very slightly noticeable dent in mine. I wasn't bothered about getting it repaired at all, but the other driver claimed on his insurance, making me eligible for a repair which cost over £300, and a courtesy car for £30/day for 8 days, all paid for by his insurance, so I didn't say no to that.
I was very impressed at the quality of the repair. It involved respraying most of one side of my car, getting rid of a lot of minor scratches in the process

Re: How long before you had your first crash?Never once said that you aren't. That was someone else in this thread who implied that. It is, however, recommended that you are in a lower gear than 3rd, drive less than 30mph and don't decide to do it just as your entering the roundabout.(Original post by sclez1)
Just have to say that you are allowed to U-turn at mini roundabouts. -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?I know, but as someone said it to you I thought I'd make sure you knew!(Original post by Dagnabbit)

Re: How long before you had your first crash?
Some quite scary stuff in this thread - especially someone having had "several crashes" in their first year of driving and saying it doesn't matter as it is all experience! That kind of attitude, and that kind of terrible driving is why MY insurance is so damn high!
I have been driving for 3 years now and thankfully had no incidents.
As for other people, well one mate had a horrible crash, one crashed a car into a wall in the snow and ice (not major thankfully), and one drove into the back of someone at a junction (very little damage to either car or more importantly those involved).
I have had a couple of near misses, people pulling out in front of me and people driving too fast on single track roads, but nothing too bad. I have made a few mistakes too, of course. I almost went into the back of someone at a roundabout because I thought they were going to go, but they stalled. My fault for trying to predict someone else's movements and not actually double checking! -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?
I've only done 3 bits of damage to the car since I started driving 7 years ago, all minor, one wasn't my fault and one was at worst 50/50. First one was backing into the corner of a wall, which slightly dented the bumper, that was a few weeks after I passed my test. Second was smashing a mirror, driving on a narrow road and someone came around a corner the other way well over to my side and seemed to expect me to get out the way. Maybe I could have but I didn't really have time and we hit mirrors. Third one was in a car park, I started to reverse out and realised someone in a 4x4 was reversing towards me, so stopped expecting them to stop or go around me. Apparently they didn't even realise I was there (presumably one of those who can't use mirrors properly yet still drives a big vehicle) and reversed into me, almost pushing the car sideways (as they continued to push even after they had hit). Got a nice dent in the back corner.
Also avoided one very nasty accident. Came over a hill doing about 60 (60limit) and a car was waiting to turn right across me. They were just starting to go as I saw them so I eased off to give them room, but they hesitated and then decided to go as I was almost on them. Had they carried on they would have got clear as I was by then braking hard, but they stopped again, already blocking my side of the road. I released the brake (pure instinct that it was too late to stop and not having trust in the ABS), threw the car left into the junction to avoid them and then right to avoid hitting the bank (it was a country road) and somehow missed them. -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?I'm not sure what you mean by this, experience of crashing? You say people who avoided crashes have just been lucky, but my Dad has been driving for over 30 years and has never even hit anything(Original post by tobie123)
it's all about gaining experience.

Re: How long before you had your first crash?this only suggests to me you are a person who walks out into the road all willy nilly OR go to brixham regularly... the only place i know of where walking on the foot path is unheard of and just casually pulling up on the side of the room often on corners and double yellows to pop get an ice cream is a common occurrence *rolls eyes* but then i am a country lass who drives her boyfriend mad because i will not cross roads when he deems it safe to with his crazy city living 'lets all go run maybe we wont get run over' standards...(Original post by Teatania)
I don't drive, but I have been on the receiving end of plenty of accidents. The majority of these have involved an R-plate driver so who knows, maybe that supports the OP's statistic. Quit mowing down pedestrians!
Although, once I was hit by a nurse with a provisional license. She shouldn't have been on the road but she did clean me up well and was more terrified about the whole experience than me!
i have been driving just over 4 years... i think
... i have one incident about 2 years ago, i dont class it as a accident... i was in a bit of a hurry and managed to clip the back right corner of my ickle corsa on my dads series 2 landrover when reversing on the driveway those beasts are not forgiving it just bit a chunk out of my car
leaving his absolutely perfect only thing was the silver paint i left behind which just needed brushing off... most silly thing is it took us another year to get it mended :|

Re: How long before you had your first crash?Er no, I know how to cross a road. I just live in an area with impatient drivers who don't understand how a zebra crossing works or who don't reduce their speed when turning corners. If anything, living in a city makes me more conscious of road safety (unlike your boyfriend it seems), but I can't speak on behalf of people behind the wheel.(Original post by x-pixie-lottie-x)

Re: How long before you had your first crash?I think you should just calm the f**k down.(Original post by RyanT)
Do you drive?
If you do then you'd realise just how terrifying it can be having to share roads with people who are incompetent like the OP. It is extremely dangerous and every year the roads extract a tragic toll on mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters in the country.
The OP should be ashamed of himself.
I've been driving for 4 years and no crash so far, touch wood. -
Re: How long before you had your first crash?
Near enough a year, if you count the ~5 months I was learning how to drive (as a learner driver in my own car with no dual controls and dad teaching me).
I have had one near miss involving a lorry and a mini roundabout, though.
I was on the way to the garage to get my exhaust replaced as the middle bit was falling off. On the way to the garage are a series of mini roundabouts that are actually the size of "normal" roundabouts. Most people drive over them, but I didn't want my exhaust to totally drop off so I was driving cautiously.
As I went round the roundabout, a lorry came up behind me. He went over the roundabout whilst I went around it, which would probably have been OK had he slowed down - but he didn't. I thankfully saw him in the mirror so slammed on the brakes and he powered on through. If I hadn't put the brakes on he'd have slammed into the side of me..
Also had a near miss with a pedestrian last week. I was travelling down a 50 road happy as larry, and suddenly some drunk bloke stumbled out of the trees and into the road. I did a textbook emergency stop to avoid hitting him, although he probably could have touched my bonnet. I was really shaken at the time, but I suppose at least I know my reactions are fairly sharp.
