Something like that. The IOC's official languages are French and then English.

Basically, the French are always very proud of their language and insist that it's used - they wanted it to be an official UN language when they joined, and also with the EU I just wish the Germans had done the same I like the German language :/
Love the German Language. So elegant, beautiful and mostly regular

Because the IOC is based in Switzerland.
This isn't the reason. (And besides, most Swiss speak German.)

It is because Pierre de Coubertin (French) founded what is known as the "Modern Olympics". Hence the primary language is French.

Modern olympics/IOC were founded by a french guy - Pierre De coubertin - makes perfect sense really. Not that it really matters anyway

agreed. the Olympics started in Athens, so shouldn't they be speaking English and Greek? and even if French is the official olympic language.. if the olympics is based in the UK, shouldn't English go first and then the French? :hmmm:

Double agree. I dont know why French would come first in a country where the national language is English

French and English may be the official languages but E becomes before F in the alphabet bitches, and all truly professional organisations do stuff alphabetically, e.g. the order or the countries parading around now.
    Greece came first...

Just wandering, why is it that the French announcer speaks before the English one. Shouldn't it be the other way round?
think because baron coubertin founded the IOC and was a frenchy

This may be seen as pedantic, but London isn't running the games, it's hosting the games. The games are owned by the IOC and they dictate how it's run - obviously they give the host nation enormous lee-way to tailor it how they want, but a fundamental rule is the languages announcers use.

The official language of the Olympics is French, because the modern Olympic Games were revived by the Baron Pierre de Courbetin, who was obvs French.

why do they even have a french announcer? Am I missing something?
Dunno. Funny how no one understood the French though. In English everyone cheered but no one understands French so kinda pointless including it first.

Some French guy started the Olympic movement, and out of respect to him they say stuff in French. It has to be French first else people would jsut listen to the English and then boo the person talking gibberish.

I was thinking this exact same thing, but don't they always do that? I think they do it on the Eurovision Song Contest too.
No English then French in Eurovision
