Ok, so she studied biomedical science, and since she had to commute she never went to the lecture, practicals yes but lectures no. She still got a first Just thought I'd share. At Birmingham Aston uni. Why dont people think this is acheivable? Are lectures even necessary?

Which is it?

Some people work better on their own, others prefer the structure of attending lectures. Plus, the fact that lectures weren't attended doesn't mean your "friend" did no work. Whenever I had to miss a lecture, which didn't happen often, I always made sure to do a lot of work to catch up.

Personally I find lectures inherently dull / unengaging unless it's on a topic I'm specifically interested in. It's not school, you're not there to learn just by listening to people who "know more than you"... so, attend the lectures that you're going to get something out of, and otherwise, direct your own study. You'll have much more to say, and many more INTERESTING things to say, in interactive group sessions if you spend some time researching the area of study yourself and forming your own opinions, than if you just regurgitate what you heard in a lecture.

Tryhards who attend every lecture simply to say that they never miss a lecture, whilst not actually learning much FROM those lectures - in my opinion - are simply a bit "stuck" on the school / college "teacher and pupil", structured, curriculum based learning style.

Personally, I need some interaction with lecturers to boost my study and I can't imagine studying without it. But it is different for everyone.

Maybe she got a friend to record the lectures on a dictaphone for her? Maybe the slides that were up on vle/blackboard were enough to go by in addition to her futher reading?

As Bhumbauze said, I felt as if though a lot of people on my course went to all the lectures so that they felt good about themselves and almost because they felt obliged to. I know that many of them simply spent most of the lecture on their phones or not paying attention.
