Never planned on a legal career but do I have a chance now?
In School I was the type that couldn't really be bothered revising. In my GCSEs I got AABBBBBBC ,A Level - BCD and AS Level- D. I had applied for business studies but didn't get in because I messed up my A Levels. I went through clearing and got onto the Law & Environment LLB at Northumbria University (it was on clearing because it was just new). Back then it was a bit of an impulse descision but now after my 2nd year I really like law! I'd love to pursue a career as a solicitor but I know my grades aren't very good, I'm expecting to get a 2:1 though as I'm a much harder worker now. I don't have any work experience either but I can arrange this ASAP. I don't know whether I should apply for the LPC or not because my family doesn't have a lot of money so it will be a big financial stretch and I don't know if I'll get a job at the end of it so I could be £10,000 in debt for no reason. Do I think I'd have a shot or would it be wiser for me to try and pursue a different career. Thank You

You have about 4 days to get some applications in for this year. Give it a go, it won't cost you anything.

I really wouldn't spend £10k on the LPC if I were you.

It seems far, far too risky.

    Not sure to be honest.

I would look at the websites of solicitors' firms in the areas you are interested in working. You would probably be in for a good shot if you write good applications and come across well at interview. You could try and apply for a TC which sponsors your TC, or otherwise try to get the TC sorted in advance.

An alternative would be to spend a year working as a paralegal and try to secure a TC during that year.

Hmmm...you are in a tricky situation.

I think the advice most people would give you is that it would be very unwise to self-fund the LPC (certainly at this stage). The problem is that the types of large firms that sponsor the LPC and recruit in advance are, to be frank, unlikely to consider your application because it falls below their minimum A-level requirements.

Of course, that's not be say that smaller firms aren't also bombarded with TC applications from people with AAA and a degree from a top university. I would suggest that in order to "level up" your application with other candidates you will probably need to spend some time working in the industry. Perhaps beginning with some informal work experience, then working as legal secretary and, hopefully, ultimately as a paralegal.

It might be that if you paralegal for a firm they might be able to offer you a training contract. Even if they can't sponsor your LPC, at least you won't be taking a gamble when you self-fund. There is also the added bonus of knowing that you are making the right decision to go into law before forking out the money.

My tuppence worth - do not self-fund the LPC!!! If, like you say, it's be a financial stretch for your family to help you out then I would not recommend it at all.

Whereabouts do you want to work? London or the regional areas because I suspect their entry criteria may differ (if only slightly). I would definitely recommend doing a bit of research; maybe talk to HR at firms you think you may be interested in getting a TC and then formulate a plan from there.

And even if you do get a TC at a firm that doesn't sponsor you, you'll be able to do it knowing that you have a secured role at the end and that's better than having the pressure of £10K weighing down on you!
