Re: The Queen needs to step downI think word you are looking for is 'barely'(Original post by This Honest)
I was also disappointed when she looked dull, merely interested. Just sat there with no emotion.
Merely is synonymous with 'only', she didn't look interested at all.

Re: The Queen needs to step downWasn't she most miserable and twiddling her fingers when the UK Athletes came out? The most significant part of the event.(Original post by Snagprophet)
This is an overreaction. So you're telling me she takes her eyes off the athletes for one second and suddenly she's a spoiled, bored brat? She an old lady, of course she's going to look unhappy. I can't imagine most people were comfortable for having to sit there for so long, about five hours to be honest. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downLeaving aside whether that was the most significant part of the event, for how long were the British team marching around the stadium? For how long was the Queen staring at her hands?(Original post by Raheem786)

The TV director did what TV directors have done down the ages, cut to someone, who in the instant that director says "cue 5", decides to do something unexpected and unfortunate. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downThere is no promise that she won't step down there? Nothing at all to suggest there is.(Original post by nulli tertius)
I hope you don't promise me you will do something and then expect to have a get out if you don't fancy it any more (and I am not even the Creator of the universe). -
Re: The Queen needs to step down
Some peoples neutral expression looks gloomy, doesn't mean they are gloomy.
I often get told 'smile you miserable bugger'
Well i was feeling perfectly content as a drank my tea and read my newspaper, however i now feel the urge to scold you with my beverage and beat you with my reading material.
And then a smile crawls across my lips
EDIT TO ADD
once the athletes started coming out i went back to the computer, i initially didn't even plan to watch the opening ceremony i drifted in and out, what truly made me laugh was the great number of people i know before the ceremony saying things like
'ugh this is going to be so embarrassing' and 'Britain is a laughing stock'
Then when the ceremony is on its all
'MAKES YOU SO PROUD TO BE BRITISH!' and 'That's right world, WE ROCK!'
Disgusting hypocrisy, then i get called un patriotic for calling them on their hypocrisy, WTF, its easy to claim patriotism sat on your sofa drinking beer watching a show celebrating your country's culture.Last edited by cid; 28-07-2012 at 13:27. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downThis. The whole royalty business in the 21st century is just... bizarre. Also a bit nauseating. But then, I'm not a native Brit.(Original post by Bollo's Lovechild)
Yes, let's just appoint, assign or maintain positions based not on hard work, skill and intelligence, but on magic and tradition. That is the way forward. -

Re: The Queen needs to step down
The fact that someone can be royalty in the 21st century is a bit disgusting.
Now regarding Olympics, the main job you have in which you get £50mil a year for is the represent the country, as the head of state she SHOULD have made an effort to look happy at her country - every other head of state did.
This is probably the only time David Cameron actually looked like a good endorsement for his country when him and his wife where there cheering GB on!
And regarding people saying 'But she did that thing with Bond' - well yeah its about time she did do something for that money, rather then her filing her nails. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downHahah I know, I got the same stuff all over my Facebook, it was hilarious(Original post by cid)

Re: The Queen needs to step downLol but what job are you referring to? Just sitting around and being present mainly for ceremonial rather than true purpose? And why do we need anyone else to do this futile job? Monarchy is not like a career; she didn't become queen on the basis of her ability to perform any duty.(Original post by Idle)
If she can't do the job any more because of age then she should pass the crown on. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downShe looks like that... ALL the time. When she smiles it is obviously forced and fake looking. She permanently looks dead in the eyes.(Original post by Lady Maleficent)
[/B]You are over-analysing her body language. I don't think it's fair to judge her attitude through the odd camera visual. Like I sad - she can't grin and look engrossed all the time.
All she had to do is sit in a chair, turn around and say "hello Mr Bond". probably reluctantly persuaded to by her PR man to make the monarchy "more accessible". You're talking as if she actually had to jump out of a helicopter.(Original post by Lady Maleficent)
I think she did that through the James Bond skit. Why would she have agreed to do such an unprecedented thing if she wasn't bothered about the Opening Ceremony? -
Re: The Queen needs to step downThat's debatable.(Original post by jacketpotato)
I think people have to remember she is just human. -
Re: The Queen needs to step downMagic and traditional is the whole point of the monarchy - its why we still have it and why most people support it. I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping a bit of tradition.(Original post by Bollo's Lovechild)

Re: The Queen needs to step down
Whilst I make no attempt to cover up the fact that I disagree with even so much as having a royal family, one cannot deny that the Queen jumping from an airborne helicopter with James Bond was quite the spectacle; I'm sure a majority of the supposed billion viewers rather enjoyed it as much as I did.

Re: The Queen needs to step down
She's 86 now (I believe), was probably tired and as the Queen she isn't allowed to express too much emotion, as in look excited, WOWWW! the entire time. The camera probably just caught her at the moment where she happened to be looking at her fingers. She couldn't keep her eyes on it the whole time.

Re: The Queen needs to step downI hope your question wasn't an actual question. Obviously the purpose she serves is to act as Head of State, something she does very well.(Original post by lilyobz)
What purpose do they even serve? My god.. get rid of them all.
