Re: Olympics opening ceremony was 'multicultural crap', Tory MP tweets
The racial make up, if that's what the MP is concerned about, is probably representative of London, rather than the UK, as one would expect.
What's so 'multicultural' about the industrial revolution and the NHS? Seems pretty British to me... -
Re: Olympics opening ceremony was 'multicultural crap', Tory MP tweetsThis.(Original post by Xotol)
I guess the organisers thought that the opening ceremony is basically Britain's chance to 'show off' to the world and make a statement on how great this nation is. Our best shot was to go down the culture and history route since that's what tends to make Britain 'special'.
As for the multiculturalism issue, I don't really see a problem with it. After all, you're not going to please everybody - if the multiculturalism wasn't as stressed people would have complained and vice versa. I tried not to focus on any of that and enjoy the ceremony for what it was.
I agree with your last point. There were some random moments but Bean was funny, and I was kind of impressed by the industrial revolution bit. Oh, and the FLAME IN THE CAULDRON. SO COOL. -
Multiculturalism is one thing - racial diversity is another and it depends what this MP was referring to. It all seemed pretty British in terms of culture. If a black person was born and raised in Britain, how can anyone assume that they belong to a different culture than a white person?

Apart from the participants, it wasn't really multicultural crap apart from when they had a load of Caribbean immigrants walking in in suits. It was legitimately about English history, such as once green lands becoming absorbed into industrial nightmare of urban areas. There's still most of the original countryside in England left, however. I thought the steam punk and the forging of the Olympic rings was awesome. Also the shout outs to the armed forces, the NHS, various literature and music was great.
Apart from that Dizzy Rascal prick 'And all I care about is sex and violence' really? Is that where English music has reached? Jesus.
The thread on 4chan was so funny, the Americans were making fun at how many black people there were and then their athletes turned out to be mostly black, not only that but dressed as French airline stewards, whereas ours was 90% white IN GLORIOUS GOLD AND WHITE TRACKSUITS! So funny.
I think the only thing I would change would be to stop the music through the decades at the 90s and just play a load of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd and Queen songs.Last edited by Snagprophet; 28-07-2012 at 04:17. -
Wouldn't you consider the Windrush to be a legitimate part of English history? I'm sure a large number of people within the British-Caribbean community consider it an important part of our history, and it does go some way to explain the diversity of the "modern" part of the show (said diversity may have been exaggerated but it depends if they were trying to portray London, or Britain as a whole)(Original post by Snagprophet)

WTF is wrong with all these people? FFS it was a little opening ceremony which was done for fun, who cares about race? What are we going to turn people down from volunteering in a ceremony because they're black or asian? LOL!
Infact, I don't think their should have been non-white people in the opening ceremony because that gives the world the idea that we are a tolerant and civilised people like the Canadians, Americans, Australians etc when in actual fact most British people are intolerant scum like that tory MP and many people posting here. -
Tone down the anger a little teeny tad? I know my comments here haven't been intolerant so that wasn't directed at me. However, hello generalisation, that most British people are scum. Quite offensive.(Original post by Theoneoranro)

Re: Olympics opening ceremony was 'multicultural crap', Tory MP tweetsThe average British person is MUCH more moody, racist and intolerant than the average american, new zealander, canadian etc. If you don't believe me go to those countries and compare it to the UK. In the UK everyone walks around like zombies who want to kill each other while being extremely paranoid and suspicious of each other but in the US or other countries you'll find everyone will be in a super good mood and they'll be like 'heyyyy whats uppp' to random people, strangers there talk to you in a really friendly way and you're supposed to talk back because everyone is friendly there. Over in the UK if someone says 'Asians and Blacks are ruining this country, they're so bad etc' the average White British response would be like 'yeahhh we're losing our country, yeahhhh so it's only racist when whites do it ehhh yeahhhhhhhh BRITAIN ENGLAND ENGLAND' while in another country the white person would respond like 'Get out of here you sick person'. Don't believe me? Go to the US, go to Canada, France or whatever and compare it with the UK. Infact, i've been to third world countries and I can safely say people in those countries (yes the people who are constantly insulted by the ignorant british people) are a lot more friendly than your average British bloke, they may not have the luxury lifestyles that we have but I can tell you for sure they enjoy life much more than us with the little they have (without getting wasted every night). Once you've explored the world a little you'll see how Britain is such a sad and depressing place full of morons complaining 24/7 about stupid things.(Original post by ChloeElizabeth)

And this is coming from a British part white person who looks 100% white like you're average english bloke (so you can't complain about how I should be kicked out of here for not being white while complaining about his 'great' country).Last edited by Theoneoranro; 28-07-2012 at 05:05. -
Honestly I feel you need to chill out and relax a little.
Also maybe evaluate the people you are associating with. I am from East London and work in North, South and West, I know the type of person you are on about but take a step back from the Daily Mail, we are not all like that. I can't comment on Middle England, I don't know that area, but there is so much diversity in London that if all Brits were like that I'm sure I would see it more.
The type of person you are referring to is a result of a very, very poor education - not an excuse, this is often self-inflicted. But don't lower yourself to their level, rise above it, if you walk around thinking everyone you meet is full of hate then this is going to affect how people view you. -
Re: Olympics opening ceremony was 'multicultural crap', Tory MP tweetswhy would you 'know' you're in trouble?(Original post by democracyforum)
Choose your future.
When a South American country has a higher white population than a European one, you know you're in trouble

France's colonial legacy means that a lot of people on the African continent speak french, and were brought up in a Franco-influenced environment. They speak French, they are French citizens and they represent France in football. So, by the colour of their skin- you are suggesting that they are not French and that by the very nature of their skin, they are 'trouble' for Europe's future. Somehow, I fail to see any real significance.
'Trouble' is never really defined by demographics anyway- there are plenty of Multicultural nations who are very prosperous in the world. More often than not, the success of states is defined by financial and commercial issues, as opposed to racial homogenity. In fact, nationalism through ethnic consolidation actually tends to enforce the problems of large governments and protectionism, than states which don't adopt ethnic nationalism as state policy. -
Re: Olympics opening ceremony was 'multicultural crap', Tory MP tweets
Whoever's talking about race cannot suck my dick, frankly.
I thought the ceremony was alright, however there was some real deaths, including the beginning rural stuff, that abominable 'social media yayyy' stuff, and the ****ing voldemort.
Don't quite know what they could've done to fill the time, but I think the industrial stuff and the music, more rhythm-based, making the entire stadium shake.. That's what we should've tried to put across. -

You what, mate?
To try and bring up race *******s at:
a) arguably the most multi-cultural capital in the world
b) on the day of the start of the most harmonious event in the world
is just pathetic. -
