Re: Crap events(Original post by social outcast)
firstly its called dressage and secondly i'd love to see you try . The dressage riders have an incredible amount of control over there bodies, they have a huge amount of core strength, and control
The main part of the event is training your horse - not yourself. The horse is the performer (at a stretch it's an athlete), and the rider doesn't have to physically exert themselves.(Original post by HellOnHighHeels)
All Equestrian events take skill and control, not just over themselves but the horses. Also, the rider will have had a huge part in training and breaking the horse in, which is a skill in itself. -
Re: Crap eventsHaha what a silly comment(Original post by RtGOAT)
This maybe controversial but 100m is overrated, all they do is run as fast as they can. No skill or talent involved. -
Re: Crap eventsI feel your judging a sport unfairly. I have never ridden a horse but I can at least appreciate the large amount of core and leg strength/positioning involved in controlling a horse. I see what your point is though, the level of obvious physical excursion isn't there.(Original post by Hopple)

Running relies on technique. It's obvious you have no interest in the sport or know anything about it, so I'm not sure why you feel you know how a person gets good at it.(Original post by RtGOAT)
I probably couldn't and even if I trained hard for it I probably couldn't which proves my point there is no skill involved its just genetic, you're either born quick or you're not.Last edited by Converse Rocker; 28-07-2012 at 18:25. -
Re: Crap eventsMay a ask do you ride? i am young dressage rider and my fitness has a huge effect on my horses way of going and if i don't ride for a few days i loss fitness and mine and my horses performs drops, physically the olympic dressage riders are very fit . Also the eventers have to gallop and jump for around 11 minutes which would give most people a heart act(Original post by Hopple)

Re: Crap eventsIt is only the first time they ride the horse in the modern pentathlon in all the other equestrian disciplines they will be long established partnerships(Original post by anna-chipie 95)
And anyway, horse events are a test of the rider's skill- often it is the first time they have ridden that horse. They have not trained with it, they have to stay on over jumps etc, many people have been thrown off because the rider was unfamiliar to the horse. -
Re: Crap eventsOk that picture isn't what I imagined archery to be like. I was imaging people on one knee arching the arrow over like 50 meters. I should probably watch things before commenting in future.(Original post by Junaid96)
What?? Archery is practically the same thing.. either be against them both or for them both.

Re: Crap eventsWell yes, I'm not saying you just sit there and the horse will glide around balancing you on it. I do think that if you want to get kids to enjoy being healthy then horse ballet is not anywhere near the best option.(Original post by Converse Rocker)

I've ridden a donkey once, and I didn't find it physically demanding at all despite being only 5. Had to wear a helmet and all that too.(Original post by social outcast)

Is it more physically demanding for the horse or the person? The horse deserves the medal, not the human, in the same way that proper athletes get the medal, not their trainer.
I take it you both agree with me about gun shooting and archery though?
-
Re: Crap eventsthe physically demand is probably pretty equal and it is a great way to get kids healthy as it outside and its can be very good for your fitness. I can't comment amount shooting of archery as a only have moderate experience in these events(Original post by Hopple)

Re: Crap eventsNo, the horse is doing most of it. Whatever you're having to do, it's having to do for itself and carry you. And there may be some health benefits, but definitely not as much as if you use your own legs to run around. Do the grand national without a horse and then you'll see what exercise really is.(Original post by social outcast)

But you can see them, they're just standing there?I can't comment amount shooting of archery as a only have moderate experience in these events

Re: Crap eventsYou literally don't have a clue what you are talking about.(Original post by DaveSmith99)
There are a lot of really rubbish sports that wouldn't really exist if they weren't part of a larger event. I only really pay attention to proper sports, dont really give two ****s about who can throw a shot put the furthest or who can use a pole to get over the highest bar. -
Re: Crap events
I've done shooting at high levels. It's not easy. No it doesnt require the same athleticism as sprinting, but that doesn't require the same athleticism as marathon running. Or weightlifting. Just because it's a different test doesn't mean it's inferior.
Personally, the only 'silly sports' in the Olympics are the ones for whom it's not the most important tournament; football, tennis [soon to be] golf, etc.
Oh, and Synchronised Swimming. -
Re: Crap eventsI know about as much as you about horse riding so I don't know how it compares to other sports. I know it helps with the strength of certain areas, but other than that I don't know.(Original post by Hopple)

Well it depends whether you think Olympic sports should require a large amount of physical effort. So far as I know, a sport doesn't have to be physically demanding and shooting/archery take just as much skill and practice as something like swimming or running.I take it you both agree with me about gun shooting and archery though?
I mean look at darts, some of the best in the world are massively unfit and overweight, but it's still a sport.Last edited by Converse Rocker; 28-07-2012 at 19:07. -
